Das Thema, das Weber als Grundlage zu den vorliegenden Variationen (Kompositionsjahr: 1804) diente, stammt aus der Oper Samori des Abbé Vogler, bei dem er in Wien von 1803 bis 1804 Schüler war. Die Variationen op. 6 entstanden offenbar auf die Veranlassung Voglers hin. Ursprünglich plante Weber noch Variationen zu 5 weiteren Themen aus der Oper, die Vogler schließlich aber selbst schrieb. Die vorliegende praktische Ausgabe folgt dem Text der Weber-Gesamtausgabe.

The President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, asked me to compose a piano work which should relate to the German anthem and was to be performed for the first time on the occasion of his retirement from political activities in autumn 2017. The title Variationen mit Haydn [Variations with Haydn] illustrates that Haydn's own variations on his hymn are part of the work, yet are modified immediately upon appearance. The piece consists of the theme as set by Haydn, four groups of four variations each, with the first of each variation being audibly close to Haydn, while the others gradually move farther away from him. The theme reappears in the coda very softly and pensively – damaged, yet not broken. Stefan Heucke.

Dieses Variations-Stück habe ich am Ende meines Musikstudiums meiner Klavierlehrerin Johanna Wiedenbach gewidmet. Ich hatte eine sehr gute Zeit bei ihr, und was ich auf dem Klavier kann, habe ich vor allem bei ihr gelernt. Wenn ich nun dieses Stück spiele, denke ich voller Dankbarkeit an sie und an die Stücke, die ich bei ihr lernte.

I dedicated this variation piece to my piano teacher Johanna Wiedenbach at the end of my music studies. I had a very good time with her, and what I am able to play on the piano I mostly learnt with her. When I play this piece now I think of her full of thankfulness and I think of the music I learnt with her.
