This particular composition utilizes the centering 'ah' of Buddhism, the meditative resting periods of Zen, the plainchant of Christianity, the minimalism of New Age, and more. My inspiration for the melodic line is the 3 main words in the traditional Ave Maria text; Ave (Hail) higher in the staff for celebration, Gratia (Grace) mid-staff for acceptance, and Dominus (God) low in the staff for humility. The melodic range for Oboe is thus quite large - a full two octaves, from Bb above the staff to Middle C. The cello accompaniment is the same in every bar of the entire piece; a circling minimalist 2 chord broken triad ostinato.
