Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, published in 1741, remain a central part of Baroque keyboard literature, and like many of Bach's works, they stand as a testament to his seemingly effortless mastery of compositional technique. The piece begins with a simple Aria, built upon the ground bass that serves as the harmonic basis for each of the 30 variations that follow, and ends with a repetition of the Aria, having come full-circle. This arrangement by David Haskins of selections from the Goldberg Variations was commissioned by Andrew McCandless, Principal Trumpet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and was premiered at the Sun Valley Music Festival. Scored for 12 trumpets in two choirs, this arrangement is intended for advanced performers. Of the 30 original variations, 9 have been included here, presenting a variety of styles that are designed to highlight the lyrical and virtuosic capabilities of the trumpet. This arrangement is scored for a double choir of six performers with the following instrumentation; each 6-part choir consisting of: Piccolo Trumpet in B-flat, Trumpet in E-flat, 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Trumpets in B-flat. One C Trumpet doubles on a rotary and one B-flat Trumpet doubles on Flugelhorn.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6042). In 'Theme with Variations' composed in 1996 Tatyana Komarova uses a simple cantabile 11-bar theme alternating between 2/4 and 3/4 time. The seven variations are of different length, ranging between 8 and 37 bars, and of different character; the cycle moves from a peacefully flowing variation via partly dance-like, partly extremely virtuoso variations to the meditative final section which recalls the mood of the theme like an echo. Despite the impression of individuality of the variations, the sound material of the theme is used in each of these variations with almost serial strictness.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho from 1995 to 1997 when I was in my early 20s. I wrote this work several years after returning to the United States. Each variation is based on a scene from Lesotho, some being an everyday activity, such as plowing fields or looking out over the mountains. The earlier variations are more light-hearted than the later variations, which deal with more serious issues including drought and illness. While all of the variations are based on the Lesotho National Anthem, an additional song, Mohololi, also appears in the later variations. I heard the song just once, at the funeral of a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer, Jeremy Rolfs, who died in a car accident in South Africa at the young age of 27. Jeremy and I had discussed composing an opera based on music and stories from Lesotho. While that project never came to fruition, I offer this work in his memory.

Although the suggested registration is for three manuals, all movements can be very effectively played on two manuals.
