The first two variations are in the style of John Stanley. The third variation is in the form of a chorale prelude. The suggested stop registration is for three manuals and is only a guide. All movements only require a small number of light stops and therefore can very effectively be played on a small two manual instrument.

The melody is derived from Russian composer Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches, Suite No. 1, Op. 10, Movement 4. In these variations, the opening eight-bar theme provided the inspiration for the work. Armenians identify with the theme as a patriotic song Zeitountsiner or Arevn Yelav, Zeitountsiner (The sun rose, people of Zeitoun). In this arrangement for piano, the five variations in D major are a step lower, suited for the intermediate player. The original key for orchestra is E major. Techniques of motivic development include changes in: style, tonality, harmonization, meter (5/4) and tempo.
