The movements, Call of the Mockingbird, Trail of Tears, and Fanfare for the Volunteer reflect on broad themes relating to the history and culture of the state. The work was released in 1999 on a cd for Sony Classical performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra titled by its final movement Fanfare for the Volunteer.Call of the Mockingbird;  The evocations of nature and landscape. In the course of its many voicings (both literal and figurative), the theme evokes a broad range of images, from the bird of the title to the ruggedness of the Appalachian terrain.Trail of Tears;  The tragedy of the forced migration of the Cherokee Indians in 1838-39. An episode in American history, the work incorporates aspects of Native American, Celtic and Central European traditions within the broader context of a symphonic composition.Fanfare for the Volunteer;  The fierce and bittersweet pride of the southeastern United States. Perhaps, the clearest blending of O’Connor’s background as a traditional fiddler with his more recent work as a symphonic composer. The American Revolution. On the companion recording Liberty!, album notes author Thomas Fleming writes, ...something remarkable was taking shape in his imagination – sounds more extraordinary than he had ever experienced. On a trip to Key West, he visited Ernest Hemingway’s house. In the sundrenched garden, music leapt into O’Connor’s mind and in a breathtaking two hours, Surrender the Sword – and its orchestral outline – was on paper. It is unquestionably one of the most passionate orchestral pieces he has ever written. In the A part, the music is busy. You can imagine voices, perhaps in Congress, perhaps in a crowd in New York or Philadelphia, wondering what is going to happen next, as General George Washington is about to resign as commander-in-chief of the American army, O’Connor says. Then comes a long melodic arc, swelling with a triumphant confidence that depicts the great military leader extending his sword to surrender it forever. It was recorded by O’Connor and Wynton Marsalis for the album Liberty!. The recording was also used throughout the film documentary produced for PBS, Liberty! The American Revolution. This may very well be the first duet ever written for trumpet and violin. Summarized as a triumph by album notes writer Thomas Fleming, he goes on to characterize the duet by saying Marsalis’ sound echoes the noble sadness of this celebration of the heroic death of British General James Wolfe before Quebec in 1759. The piece turns into a musical gallop, evoking the surging seesaw battle Wolfe’s army fought outside the walls of the fortress city. We have a collaboration between the trumpet wizardry of Wynton Marsalis and Mark O’Connor’s extraordinary virtuosity on the fiddle. Gigue Fiddle Sonata for violin, cello and piano composed and adapted by Mark O’Connor was a commission from the Library Of Congress in Washington D.C. It was premiered in Jefferson Hall during their prestigious ‘97-’98 chamber music season. The Library was featuring piano in their programming that year therefore requesting O’Connor to compose utilizing the instrument. The premier was broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today and was also the centerpiece for a national public radio special America’s Fiddler, Mark O’Connor at the Library Of Congress. Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada.
