Autumn Days (Late Summer/Fall): A dreamy melody accompanies an adaptation of the poems October and November by Helen Hunt Jackson.

Butterflyin’ (Spring, Summer) :  Inspired by the story of the Boy and the Butterfly, this lovely song tells the tale of a weary caterpillar who perseveres through many struggles, holds onto its dreams, and emerges a beautiful butterfly.

First Snow (Late Fall/ Winter): This hauntingly beautiful original song celebrates the magic of winter's first snowfall!

The Crocuses (Late Winter/Spring) : Set to a sweet, original melody, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's poem The Crocuses has been adapted into a lovely song about the first flowers of spring and their love for Mother Earth.

The Winding Creek (Late Spring/Summer) : This folk-style song evokes nostalgic summer memories of long hot days spent playing in a country creek.

The World is a Rainbow (Spring/Summer/Fall):This fun and upbeat song teaches the colours of the rainbow by listing many red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet items found in nature!

Joanna Mills' passion is music and singing. From 1998 to 2018, she was the director of the Roncesvalles Gospel Choir and has written and directed many original children's musicals at Roncesvalles United Church. From 2011 to 2020 Joanna was the music director and head vocal teacher at Broadway Arts Centre. She performs frequently in local festivals and clubs with her six-voice folkgrass ensemble North of Queen and also sings with Toronto’s premiere rock choir newchoir. Joanna is an award-winning songwriter (Songdoor, Song of the Year, ISSA) and arranger and her works have been performed by choirs and bands all over the world. Trained formally in voice, piano, and oboe throughout her younger years, Joanna has sung in (and lead) various choirs, performed with the New Westminster Musical Theatre Guild, and teaches Musical Theatre, piano, and voice at her studio in Toronto, Ontario.

This work was written in 1999 for an international competition for quartets reflecting in music the visions in three of Edvard Munch's paintings. It is dedicated to the composer's wife, Rayna. 1. The Scream - Moderato - There are 51 versions of The Scream and the movement is in 51 sections grouped roughly into sonata form. The development is largely textural, and the movement hinges about a chord formed of open fifths a major third apart which will also re-appear in the other movements to give the quartet its sense of unity. The screaming is both audible and silent, and the footsteps on the bridge are portrayed both in a sense of passing by and also of running away. 2. Melancholy - Andante - Munch gave other titles to this painting, namely Jappe by the Shore and Jealousy . As jealousy and melancholy are retrospective emotions, tonal and modal music is employed, using the Norwegian folk song Millom bakkar og berg ut met havet set in a minor key for the first section. The A-B-A form then partially loses tonality for Jealousy, while returning to it for Melancholy itself. 3. The Dance of Life - Allegro - This movement is in rondo form, with hints of Norwegian country dances for the dancers in the painting. The two women are portrayed as one looking nostalgically to the light-heartedness of the old waltz and the other brooding on the darkness and latent sexuality of the new tango, the melodies for both of which are also corruptions of the country dances. The Munch chord alters the perspective on the scene as the movement progresses and eventually dissolves at the end as though the onlooker is passing on to another, equally unresolved future. Three light-hearted short pieces for clarinet and string quartet, evoking the genteel surroundings of a tea-room in the first half of the twentieth century. A group of friends, all amateurs, sight read the whole suite with great enjoyment and only one break (to restart the third movement.) Tea Room Quintet is ideal material to play in the background at social gatherings such as garden parties, wedding anniversaries and art exhibitions. The audio sample is of part of the third movement, which was particularly enjoyed by a recent audience. I am offering the score separately from the set of parts, to allow ensembles to choose how much to purchase. The pdfs include some blank pages, to ensure correct page turns if you are printing booklets.

The melody of this song written for the Disney film Cinderella (1950) was inspired by Liszt's Transcendental Study No. 9. It's a wistful, tender melody which matches the sentiment of the words, and in the film Cinderalla encourages her animal friends to never stop dreaming or believing in a brighter future. Other Disney songs also echo this sentiment, such as When You Wish Upon A Star from Pinnochio, which was released a decade earlier. This arrangement is in 3-parts with a simple piano accompaniment. It should be sung smoothly and with sustain, and the men can enjoy taking the tune the second time through. The ending should be dramatic and bold. There are two layout versions - one with the piano accompaniment, and the other with just the vocal parts.
