Wind Quartet - Oboe (or Flute), Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon
O Saviour of the World is a beautiful 19th century hymn, written for SATB choir with optional organ accompaniment, by Sir John Goss (1800-1880). Suitable for religious festivals such as Lent, Easter and Christmas, but also for secular events where some solemn beautiful music is required. Goss was organist at St Paul's Cathedral in London and a Professor of Harmony at the Royal Academy of Music where Sir Arthur Sullivan was among his pupils. Although this is an instrumental transcription, we can still hear the emotion through the musical techniques employed by the composer; such as sequences of overlapping lines, unexpected harmonies, the contrast between smooth legato passages and declamation, and the sudden change to unison for emphasis, all with carefully thought out dynamics.
