The song was written on a hot summer day in 1945 by Mel Torme and Bob Wells who were trying to cool down by composing a wintry lyric. It was first recorded by Nat King Cole the following year and was an instant hit. Nat King Cole revisited the song several times in his career and it has also been recorded by just about every noteworthy popular artist since, from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Paul McCartney to The Jacksons, and many more. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. That improv was uploaded to Facebook. After listening to it, I decided to rework it and add more to it. One of the things that I really like about it is that it is in 7/4 time, but it feels totally natural and organic. I also like that it exudes gratitude, at least to me. Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between October 1898 and February 1899. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. Nimrod (Adagio) was the 9th variation. The name of this variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as a music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks.
