I picked her up from the dog pound and had 10 lovely years with her. I wrote the piece as I only had one photograph of her, I lost many photographs whilst moving house recently. When I first got her camera's on mobile phones didn't exist and I wasn't a keen photographer. Having only one image it made me nostalgic so I decided to write a tune. So instead of having memories in terms of photographs now I've got a musical one to go with the images in my head. It's a happy tune as she was a happy dog that made me laugh many times. It's written in an old fashioned piano style known as 'Stride Piano' which has it's roots in the ragtime of Scott Joplin and found it's peak in the piano stylings of the great Fat's Waller in the 'Roaring Twenties'. The British pianist Russ Conway has some bearing on my style which adds a bounce in the form of reverse 10ths.My notation is simple, I haven't added fingerings or dynamic marks. The tempo mark is only a guide. I do include chord symbols which I often find are the best aide to sight reading. It's a tricky style to master but extra notes in the bass can be left out and single notes alternating with chords will suffice. No two pianists agree on these things anyway. I have included chord symbols which I always find helpful when learning a piece. It is stride piano and the left hand can be tricky but it is acceptable to leave out intervals of 10ths and octaves etc and just play single notes followed by a chord. Especially for pianists with shorter fingers.Please note this is just a piano transcription for piano solo and doesn't include notation for the other instruments in my YouTube video. It was written to be a piano solo and sounds perfectly full in that context.

I wrote it as a sort of etude to collate a lot of blues licks and get them all under my fingers but it is still quite a catchy composition with strong melodic content.There is a key change somewhere in the middle from C to Db which perhaps complicates it a little but I think it gives it a real lift and stops any blues fatigue setting in!It's a fun piece which I hope you enjoy learning and playing.NB. For me, it works very well. Elton himself was well versed in honky tonk, pub piano styles and the chord progression is very accepting of this treatment. If some of the voicings ie 10ths are too large for your left hand simply play single bass notes or octaves instead, or feel free to roll the tenths. Please note this is a piano solo and I haven't notated any of the other instruments in my YouTube arrangement. I do, however, write my arrangements for solo piano first and they sound perfect as such. I don't include fingering, phrasing or dynamic marking as no two piano teachers will agree upon so I leave this trustingly to the individual performer. I do include chord symbols which I find more helpful in learning repertoire.Have fun playing this. I did. I'm a big Elton John fan and this is one of my favourite numbers of his and it was a pleasure to notate it.

This style of music has evolved from the ragtime of Scott Joplin through the early jazz piano players like Fats Waller and James P Johnson. The left hand can be tricky but it can be simplified by replacing the tenths with single bass notes. It's both a cheerful and sentimental tune. I have included chord symbols which I find as useful as the notation when learning a piece. I haven't included pedal symbols, dynamics or fingering - leaving this as a choice for the player and no two pianist ever see eye to eye on these issues in any event!Please note this is a piano solo only and other instruments included in my YouTube video are not notated.

One of the most popular jazz standards ever written, Dorothy Fields providing the lyrics. First sung in the film 'Swing Time' by Fred Astaire to Ginger Rogers but covered by such legends as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet and more recently by Michael Buble and Phil Collins.My version is a Stride Piano version but owes the tempo and the right hand just a little bit to Erroll Garner and I take it through the 2 keys of Eb major and F major.I haven't included fingering, dynamics or pedal markings as I prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two piano teachers would ever agree on such things. Please note this is a piano solo and doesn't include notation for the other instruments that feature on my YouTube video. It was written, however, like all my compositions and arrangements, as a piano solo and sounds perfect as such. The left hand, being stride has a very full sound. This is my version of the classic tune performed by Richard Clayderman the iconic French pianist. I have done a complete departure from the arrangement he plays and done it as a slightly up tempo stride piano/ragtime piece. It's such a good melody I think it survives this treatment very well and sounds kind of cool, though I say so myself!I like to keep my arrangements as simple and easy to read as possible so I avoid pedal markings, dynamics and fingering all of which you'd struggle to find two piano teachers to agree on so  I leave them to the discretion of the individual pianist.If the intervals of 10ths are too big for your hands, as is often the case, they can be 'rolled' or just play the root note in octaves or even single notes.Please note I don't include notation for the other instruments on my YouTube recording it is simply a piano solo. I take it through the two keys of Bb major and Cb major. Cb major has 7 flats but is not so hard as you might think as it's easy to remember to flatten every note instead of having to remember which notes to flatten! I interweave arpeggios between the melody notes and it therefore has a very full sound to it. It is sort of a Stride waltz in that the bass is usually, with some variations, followed by two chords on each beat.I don't notate fingering, pedals or dynamics as I leave the interpretation up to the individual pianist and in any event no two piano teachers ever agree on these things.Please note this is a piano solo and I doesn't include notation for the other instruments on my YouTube upload, strings, drums, bass guitar. It was written for the Noel Gay show 'The Little Dog Laughed'. It's a fun song that apparently was one of Winston Churchill's favourites. So my arrangement is a tribute to Bud, Chesney and Winston!My version features a left hand stride piano/ragtime style and goes through the keys of C and F major. There are lots of stride idioms and riffs in the right hand from the likes of Scott Joplin, Fats Waller and early jazz styles as well as popular pianists such as Russ Conway and Winnifred Attwell. If you have problems with the 10ths in the bass just play octaves or single bass notes instead or possibly 'rolling' or 'bouncing' them ie playing one note and jumping as quickly as possible to the next so as to play almost simultaneously.I don't notate dynamics, fingering or pedalling and prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two teachers ever agree on such matters.Hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.

I have made a Stride piano arrangement and taken it through two keys Eb and E major. It should be played in a lively and cheerful manner. It is a fun song but still quite nostalgic.The stride left hand can be quite tricky and any 10ths can be replaced by either single notes or octaves depending on your hand size. The left hand is sometimes a little bit tricky in Stride piano but the tenths can be played in single notes or octaves or can be 'rolled' if the hands are not large enough.I don't include fingering or dynamics in my pieces and prefer to leave these up to the individual pianist as no two piano teachers ever agree on these things. I do include chord symbols as I find these the most useful in learning and memorising music. Many people have recorded this tune including Diana Dors, Carmen Macrae, Sonny Rollins, Fred Hersch etc. It is, though, perhaps less well known than other jazz standards but is nontheless a wonderfully melodic tune. It contains a little interlude in the style of JS Bach that I hope will amuse.The left hand can be tricky at speed but single notes can be played instead of octaves and tenths and the chords can be simplified without losing the overall style.I haven't included dynamic markings and fingerings, leaving this choice to the individual pianist. Likewise with the use of sustain pedal. Seldom can you get two pianists to agree on these things!Please note this is a solo piano version and does not contain notation of the other instruments on my YouTube video. It was however written for solo piano and sounds just as good with or without other instruments.
