Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.890724 Composed by John Pitts. Contemporary,Standards,World. Score. 33 pages. Intensely Pleasant Music #5012469. Published by Intensely Pleasant Music (A0.890724). The word rÄga literally means ‘colour’, and from that also ‘passion’ or ‘emotion’.  The musical term rÄga refers to a performance, within the melodic and structural conventions of Indian classical music, that evokes a particular emotion.  RÄga Jogiya Kalingra Aroma of Saffron evokes a mood of wonder: It is night-time.  Strong breezes blow through purple fields of the beautiful saffron flower, its red stigma the source of the world’s most expensive spice, releasing wafts of powerful fragrance. This fully composed RÄga Jogiya Kalingra Aroma of Saffron is a solo performance piece for piano lasting around 16 minutes.  It is a fully fleshed-out version of the musical material from the 12th rÄga/raag in the book How to Play Indian Sitar Raags on a Piano (2016) by British composer John Pitts, and is suitable for advanced pianists. Indian rÄgas have an extraordinary musical heritage dating back several centuries (from the area that is now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) - a truly unique musical genre of fascinating melodic beauty and rhythmic intricacy – freely combining elaborate composed melodies with carefully rehearsed improvisation.

Instrumental Duet Guitar,Instrumental Duet,Mandolin - Digital Download SKU: A0.1017673 Composed by Turlough Ó Carolan. Arranged by Gordon Jackson. Baroque,Celtic,Classical,Folk,World. Score and parts. 1 pages. Gordon Jackson #6434557. Published by Gordon Jackson (A0.1017673). Planxty IrwinTurlough Ó Carolan (1670-1738) was an Irish harper and composer. Carolan’s music does not sit comfortably in any one particular musical tradition. He was the product of a long line of Irish harpers dating from medieval times or before. He was also aware of Irish folk music, with many of his tunes having a ‘trad’ quality, particularly in his jig-like compositions. Finally, Carolan was influenced by the music of Italian Baroque composers that he would have heard played at the great houses he visited. Carolan’s Draught is an example of the latter. This pleasant little tune is actually titled ‘Colonel John Irwin’ (Carolan’s modus operandi was to compose tunes, often with lyrics, in honour of his wealthy patrons and their various family members). However, this one has become much more widely known as ‘Planxty Irwin’. A planxty is a tune, usually lively, composed in honour of a patron, although the actual etymology of the word is unknown, and may even have been coined by Carolan himself. For my arrangement of the tune I have written a counterpoint, which comes in second time around. Whilst the basic melody is mostly ‘swung’, i.e. with beats comprising dotted quaver-semiquaver-quaver (dotted 16th-32nd-16th), the counterpoint is ‘straight’, i.e. a quaver-quaver-quaver beat (16th-16th-16th). This creates a pleasant (I hope!) syncopation throughout.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.778226 Composed by John McAllister. Contemporary,Folk,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 52 pages. John McAllister #6665567. Published by John McAllister (A0.778226). Pitt Street Bridge was commissioned by the Moultrie Middle School Band to be premiered at the 2020 SCMEA Conference. The remains of the Pitt Street Bridge lie in the Intercoastal Waterway and in what is now called Pickett Bridge Recreation Area. It is within walking distance from the middle school, and it is an integral part of Mt. Pleasant’s history. Originally designed as a trolley bridge that connected Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant, Pitt Street Bridge is now a haven for recreation and relaxation. The lively melodies throughout the piece depict the festive activities that take place on Pitt Street Bridge. The piece opens as though one is standing on the Pitt Street Bridge, gazing out at the immensely beautiful surroundings. Slow and serene as the sun blankets the harbor and the marsh. The bridge has a tremendous history, dating back to the revolutionary war, which is where the melody begins. Deconstructed from part of Sir Peter Parker, a song about the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. A distant memory, this melody will find itself in many ways throughout (three notes rising diatonically followed by a falling 3rd). The woodwinds pattern in the opening (which also appears throughout), represents the ripples in the water, flowing gently back and forth. The military past of the bridge is hinted at in two ways. The snare in the opening, reminiscent of the rudimental style and several harmonies throughout that hint at an Americana style. As the piece picks up tempo, the hustle and bustle of 1920s Charleston comes to life. Harmonically, everything is still built off of the foundation of the original tune, but now we’re in bright and joyous times and people are transported to and from the island in the Roarin’ 20s. The optimism abounds until the climax of the piece as the bridge (musically speaking), fades into the past. At the finale, one is standing on the bridge with the distant melody still played on the flute.
