For this Christmas here is a dramatic Fantasia, for Piano Solo, based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique. Every single note is written to express, and sometimes expand upon, the word of the text at that point in time. There is no Time Signature as it is an irregular meter which changes every few bars using 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4 but always maintaining a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo with many markings of articulation. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.

Sweelinck's first published works date from around 1592-94, and he composed a variety of music, including chansons and keyboard music. He was known for his keyboard playing and was a teacher to German composers Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann. Fantasia Do Sol Fa Mi is an ostinato-based composition that showcases Sweelinck's mastery of counterpoint.

It is later developed in many ways, including canons, augmentation, diminution, and double augmentation. The piece forms an essential link between the Renaissance and the Baroque.

A Little Fantasia on Two American Folk Hymns mashes up two hymn tunes that are widely used in American hymnals: HOLY MANNA (All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly; God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens) and PLEADING SAVIOR (Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly; Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service). This mashup resulted from the fact that I often confuse and conflate these two tunes, as they're similar in sound and feel.

The setting is cheerful and active, accompanied by running eighth notes, with a calm center section. Harmonies feature lots of 4ths and 5ths, maintaining the American folk style.

Layout is in a larger style font than lead sheets in a typical fakebook yet still condensed to fit on only a few pages.
