The magnitude of the vast ocean, the anticipation of catching the fish, memories of a distant waltz, and the exciting fight that ends in triumph. This wonderful Sonatina is in 3 movements for the intermediate flutist.  It is a finalist for the 2022 New Voices for Young Flutists competition.  Set in the band friendly Key of B-flat major, Movement 1 is a Classical Sonata Allegro Form with an accessible flute part and a piano part that makes it BIG!   It's called 'Clockworks' because of the type of clock sounds used, especially in the piano part. The range for the flutist is Low A to High D.    Movement 2 is called 'Time for Caring.'  I wrote the melody I wanted to play.  It's lovely and makes you want to develop an even more beautiful sound.  It's range is Low F to High D with a fast scale going from Low F up to mid B-flat.   This is also in the Key of B-flat.   The 3rd Movement is also in the Key of B-flat.  I called it 'Time to Grow.'  It's rhythm is in 8/8, usually divided into 3+3+2, although there are a few measures where it is easier for the flutist to think of it in 2+2+2+2.   It has a lot of drive in the rhythm and I think has a Broadway kind of sound, as if people were moving and walking across a busy stage while singing.  I'm uploading a recording of this which I hope you enjoy!  The piano part is much more challenging.  Each of these movements is accessible, musical, interesting and when paired with the accompaniment a full ensemble kind of sound.   Enjoy!

As the pimrary theme emerges, the piano part depicts the rolling waves. The secondary theme is nostalgic in sound.The Second movement explores an wider set of open sounds to depict that life is both hard and beautiful.The Third movement is pure fun. I wrote it for a string group that included experienced players as well as string players that had started only two weeks before. When my string group performed it, the bass player doubled the experienced VC. We also repeated the music and had the experienced violin part wait until the second time to play. This is the string friendly key of D. Both the new cello and new violin parts mostly rely upon open strings and the first note up from that. This is the perfect way for multiple leveled groups to play an Easter song together. Enjoy!

While the original hymn is in 3/4 time, my arrangement is a cheerful 4/4 and has classical time period accompaniment.   A good upper intermediate piano part and a flute part that only reaches up to high D.   This is a happy, cheerful and fun arrangement.  Be cautious in doing it for sacrament meeting and do not overplay it.

Count Your Blessings is a cheerful hymn and I've created multiple oblilgatos for it.  This arrangement is especially good for the new flutist since two of the verses are mostly in the middle register and you don't have to change notes as rapidly.  Of course, there are some verses that more experienced player would like too!   I find myself humming the notes and articulation of the classical time period verse and it cheers me up.
