The protagonist, a struggling songwriter, kept referring to his greatest composition, Goodbye to Love but, as Carpenter said, You never hear it in the movie, they just keep referring to it. Carpenter's creative imagination supplied the tune and opening lyrics of the mystery song, which was released by the Carpenters in 1972 and went on to become one of their most popular hits. This arrangement for string quartet includes the full score and all four parts.

In the 1960s Paul McCartney's girlfriend Jane Asher got him interested in the music of Antonio Vivaldi. This led to the inspiration of having the accompaniment to Eleanor Rigby played by a string octet when the song was recorded for the Beatles' 1966 album Revolver. It was a sharp break, both in the music and the words, from the current conventions of pop music, and proved to be a milestone in the Beatles transformation from a pop/rock stage act to the experimental, recording-oriented band of their later years. This arrangement preserves the intimate, melancholy flavor of the original recording.
