In this piece, I realize neoclassical elements within a post-modern aesthetic. Chorale melodies are interweaved with contemporary countermelodies to produce a modern sound world with familiar undertones. One of the highlights of the quartet is the alto saxophone cadenza in the middle. The alto saxophonist is at liberty to improvise or follow what is on the page. As you listen, imagine the piece through two different lenses, a contrapuntal lens, and a timbral lens. Through the contrapuntal lens you will see the piece gradually depart from its traditional chorale focused language. Through the timbral lens multiple sound worlds can be heard.This piece is ideal for high school solo and ensemble competitions or performances, college ensembles, and professional players. Metamorphosis is a finalist in the 2017 Christopher Bill Composition Competition.Metamorphosis, for trombone octet, is a piece where the themes constantly change and transform into something new. In its slow beginning, a lyrical melody is played against a drone until it’s joined by more trombones. This happens three times. Then, the entire choir is joined together to form the climax to the slow section before the transition to the faster section. Almost instantly, the mood changes into a more playful sounding section. A new bouncier theme is introduced against muted eighth note chords in the background. In its second big statement, the presentation of the theme is broken up with different motives from both the beginning slow section and the fast playful theme. In its third statement, only the smaller motivic ideas are left as the volume and intensity grow. Finally, both melodies get squished together. The initial lyrical melody is once again stated, but this time it’s over the background of the second playful melody. Composed by Felicity Mazur-Park for performance by David Aaron Preston in fulfillment of the 2024 American Guild of Organists Student Commissioning Project.Ti Appartengo is based on Carlo Gesualdo's madrigal Io Parto e Non Più Dissi, which was written before, but published after Gesualdo's famous murder of his adulterous wife and her lover. In the madrigal, Gesualdo pronounces that he is leaving, but later decides not to leave when he sees that his wife (referenced as the mythological Chloris) is sad and depressed at the prospect of his absence. She is dependent on his love for her personal happiness. In essence, she belongs to him, as my work's title suggests. Compositionally, I segment portions of the madrigal and its text. I add quartal and quintal harmonies and develop selected motivic fragments through retrograde, inversion, and sequencing to paint the drama.
