Alexander L’Estrange and Joanna Forbes L’Estrange are prolific composers and arrangers of choral music, both individually and as a partnership. Receiving commissions from choral societies, schools, chamber choirs, church choirs and a cappella groups, their music is sung and enjoyed throughout the world.

Night Song was commissioned by Janet Oates for the inaugural concert by Philomel, a vocal ensemble of six sopranos singing repertoire from Hildegaard von Bingen to specially commissioned works. The words were written by poet Euan Tait about a woman carrying water in the darkness, accompanied by birdsong. The six voices are layered to create rich harmonies, building to a cascade of sound as 'the birds sing sudden rainfall'. The piece was workshopped by the BBC Singers. It is for professional or advanced amateur singers, but well worth getting six sopranos together to create an exciting choral texture. The creation of 'Canadian Streams' was inspired by two important milestones – the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation and the 60th anniversary of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Canada. For this initiative, the composer has chosen a poem written by the father of Canadian poetry, Charles G. D. Roberts. The text portrays the countless spectacular Canadian rivers that were the “witnesses� and “storytellers� of the great, beautiful, and welcoming country’s rich history.

About the Composer

Vahram Sarkissian is an Armenian-Canadian composer, conductor, and singer currently residing in Montreal, Canada. His writing style represents a musical palette ranging from influences by V century Armenian medieval chant to previously unreported endogenous vocal extended techniques. Sarkissian's music has been performed in dozens of countries including the UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, and the USA. 

His arrangement of an Armenian ancient chant Great Mystery has been included in the Oxford University Press anthology World Carols for Choirs and has been recorded by the BBC Singers. Sarkissian's instrumental work Hunting the Hunter was premiered under his baton at Carnegie Hall in 2012. His composition Joyful Light for choir has been performed more than a hundred times around the world.

Vahram Sarkissian is also active as a lecturer. His workshops and presentations on extended vocal techniques are frequently featured at the most prestigious choral festivals and symposia around the world. Some of his recent lecturing events were at the World Symposium on Choral Music (Barcelona, Spain), ACDA Regional Conference (Pittsburgh, USA), International Festival of Choral Music Europa Cantat (Tallinn, Estonia), World Voice Day at Royal College of Music (Stockholm, Sweden), Podium Choral Conference and Festival (Toronto, Canada), among others.

Vahram Sarkissian holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in composition and choral conducting. He is a member of the Composers’ Union of Armenia. He has served as a music consultant for European Choral Association (2010-2012).

I Am the Walrus is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 television film Magical Mystery Tour. Written by John Lennon and credited to Lennon–McCartney, it was released as the B-side to the single Hello, Goodbye and on the Magical Mystery TourEP and album. In the film, the song underscores a segment in which the band mime to the recording at a deserted airfield. Lennon wrote the song to confound listeners who had been affording serious scholarly interpretations of the Beatles' lyrics. He was partly inspired by two LSD trips and Lewis Carroll's 1871 poem The Walrus and the Carpenter. Compositionally, every musical letter of the alphabet is invoked and every chord is a major or a seventh. Producer George Martin arranged and added orchestral accompaniment that included violins, cellos, horns, and clarinet. The Mike Sammes Singers, a 16-voice choir of professional studio vocalists, also joined the recording, variously singing nonsense lines and shrill whooping noises. Since the Hello, Goodbye single and the Magical Mystery Tour EP both reached the top two slots on the British singles chart in December, I Am the Walrus holds the distinction of reaching numbers one and two simultaneously. Shortly after release, the song was banned by the BBC for the line Boy, you've been a naughty girl, you let your knickers down. Transposed into Ab Arranged brass quartet: 2 tpt, tbn and tuba.
