Cuban-born (he fled to the U.S. when Castro took over) Ernesto Lecuona wrote the Suite Andalucia in 1933; Malaguena, the best known and most performed part of it, is the sixth movement. It has been covered by everyone from orchestras to big bands to drum-and-bugle corps to (!) Connie Francis.This arrangement is inspired by and adapted in part from Bill Holman's spectacular 1961 arrangement for the Stan Kenton big band. The song was on Kenton's Adventures In Jazz album, which won a Grammy in 1962.I've made it considerably less adventuresome -- like taming the trumpet ranges -- so it's more accessible to mere mortals.If you need different instrumentation, I'm happy to help. Published by John Ross (A0.1137245). “For the Fallen� was written for Bec Beall and her choir “Lux Alba� and was premiered by them in 2019 at St Matthew’s Church, Albury, NSW, Australia. The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old�) has become known as the “Ode of Remembrance�, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Post�. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle� portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust� compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plain�. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight� (reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. The work concludes with an alternate setting of the opening movement “They shall not grow old�. A version of this suite with piano accompaniment is also available on this website.

Intended to be a festive concert opener, this lively work incorporates motifs derived from the Maryland State Song (Maryland, My Maryland) which itself is set to Lauriger Horatius, a melody better known as O Tannenbaum. The march is dedicated to the musicians of the Londontowne Symphony (an amateur community ensemble in Edgewater, Maryland) and was written for their Season 10 opening concert. Beginning with a lone snare drum setting a simple cadence, the march quickly builds in volume and intensity as different instruments and groups enter and play with the themes. Lesser known American bugle calls such as Church Call and To the Color vie with snippets of a frolic borrowed from a Max Reger piano piece as every player gets a moment in the spotlight, leading to a rousing finale.
