It is arranged for two clarinets in A but can also be played on Bb clarinets. The three movements composed during the late Baroque period are more Classical in style. The opening Allegro is followed by Lamento in triple time with long flowing overlapping phrases providing innovative harmonies worthy of the eldest son of J. S. Bach. The final movement, Presto is a delightful 6-8 romp. Players of advanced intermediate standard and above will enjoy this.

It can be freely played by beginning students, because of the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not prevent it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument.

This instrumental quartet version was created with ensemble practice in mind for beginning music school students who want more contact with Baroque music, ideal also for liturgical performance in churches, as it is a sacred work. This version lasts 2:25 minutes with the original melody adapted with the harmony divided between the voices of the performers.

Cantata 156 was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast (72, 73, 111 and 156), it was the last, and the only one scored for solo voice. Like Cantatas 73 and 111, it is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different melodies and choral texts in the second and sixth (final) movements, respectively; the second uses Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt (Schein, 1628), which Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir (Binemann, 1582) is reserved for the finale. This version of the piece was adapted for B♭ Tuba along with a piano accompaniment that comes with the product.

I have left out dynamic and tempo marking to be more accurate of an arrangement. The performer should take it upon themselves to add whatever phrasing or dynamic changes seem fit. This arrangement was also made for my own students who would like to perform the suites unaccompanied (like the original work) for festivals such as Solo & Ensemble.
