This edition contains tempos, ornamentation, articulation and dynamics to help guide players with less experience performing baroque music. Ornaments are authentic, either from Bach or his immediate students. Tempos, dynamics, and most articulations are my recommendations. The first trombone part is provided in both tenor and bass clef. There are also two sets of first and second parts, one with original ornaments and one with the ornaments realized in suggested notation, as well as a guide to interpreting ornaments. The Bass Trombone has no ornaments added. Performers are, of course, free to devise their own interpretations. Each volume of Bach for Trombone Trio is carefully compiled to work as a single, compatible set with a playing time under ten minutes, excellent for use in both contest and recital. The English Suites were likely composed around 1713-1714 during Bach's time in Weimar, making them among his earliest and most virtuosic keyboard suites. The origin of the English title is unclear, but it may reference the influence of French keyboard suites by composers like Charles Dieupart, who were popular in England then. However, no substantial evidence exists that the suites were composed expressly for an English patron. The English Suites combine German, Italian, and French stylistic elements rather than being distinctly English in character.  The term English was likely a later addition, possibly by Bach's biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel. The English Suites were widely disseminated and studied by later composers, indicating their importance and lasting influence in the keyboard repertoire. They represent Bach's early and highly influential contribution to the keyboard suite genre.

Bach (1685-1750) wrote a series of 24 compositions, one for each major and minor key, and he called it “The Well Tempered Clavier,� which was a keyboard type instrument. The “Prelude in C� has been transcribed by a number of people for classical guitar.  It is basically a beautiful chord progression with a picking pattern.  About 110 years later the French composer, Charles Gounod, added a melody to it and called it “Ave Maria.� It became known as the “Bach-Gounod Ave Maria,� and you can often hear it played as a duet for flute and piano.  Tarrega actually transcribed it for classical guitar in the late 1800s but you would need virtuoso skills to play it. As playability is always a priority in my arrangements I made some compromises.I kept the melody and chord progression and, to the extent I could, the bass notes.  But the voicing, those notes between the bass and melody that were real important to Bach, I just let fall where they may and used common guitar chord forms.The end result Is beautiful, recognizable, and quite playable.

Firstly, we have the version that exactly follows the harmonic scheme set forth by J. S. Bach in his Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Secondly, we have the arrangement introduced by the Choirmaster Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke in 1783 that introduces a controversial added measure designed to intensify the harmony in measure 27. Both versions employ the melody that Charles Gounod provided as an overlay to the Bach harmony. In either case, the convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide options for extended performance. The duration with the repeat runs about 4:50. This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke.
