Each partita consists of a series of dances, typically opening with a prelude-like movement followed by an Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue, with additional dances inserted. Bach supervised the publication, initially publishing them separately before compiling them into the 1731 Clavier-Übung collection.
