Theobald Böhm (1794-1881) made a brilliant arrangement of Schubert's Serenade (Ständchen - Leise flehen meine Lieder) for concert flute and piano based on the piano version by Liszt. 
This version for clarinet and guitar is based on my original version extended in line with the Böhm arrangement, allowing the melody instrument to blossom into lyrical variations of the melody.

The flamingo thinks he's ever so cultured, 
but he doesn't know which country his hero (Placido Domingo) was born in:

A sequence for clarinet and guitar based on three Viennese songs from the 1840s and 1850s
interspersed with three original yodels.


The melodies of the old songs, originally taken from the book Wiener Lieder und Tänze and then expanded, are:
1. O Theures Erbsien - a moralistic song about avoiding crime and thus prison (it appears that the old Viennese prison was called Erbsien after the principal diet of the prisoners there: Erbsen = peas)

2. Servicerl 
A celebration of drinking and courting.

3. Mein Nachbarin und I 
A song about getting on well with the widow next door....

The original yodels were initially inspired by some of the sections marked Jodel in the same book.

A simple and gentle duo, mainly in the Dorian mode (D Dorian) and, in the final short envoi, it modulates to the relative major (C major).
It is based on an old song that I wrote for a friend in Italy (Song for Jenny). In the aforementioned envoi the singer questions himself :Amore mio, dove sono, dove siamo? (My love, where am I, where are we?)

A quirky piece for clarinet and guitar involving rhythmical bounces (especially 4/4 time mixed with 3-3-2 time) and bluesy chords. 
The piece was originally intended as a setting for Prévert's poem Pour toi mon amour but the melody took on a life of its own and the bunny won the race...

This one is based on the mediæval song about Aucassin and Nicolette: Qui vauroit bons vers oïr del deport du viel antif.

Nicolette and Aucassin,
of the great pains they endured,
of the deeds that he achieved,
for his love and her bright face,
gentle the song, sweet to speak

This is a instrumental duo based on a song that I composed just before my umpteenth appearance at the New Troubadour Club at Follies Wine Bar Manchester back in 1991.
Writer's block was threatening to take over, so I wrote about writer's block, in a sort of mock blues style...

I was originally going to call this tune Mellow Spring but it turns out that that's a childcare company (creche) somewhere in the USA! 
Oh well, maybe Laid back Bounce works better as a title.
It is a laid back tune, with several variations accompanied by bluesy chords and a bouncy rhythm, which nevertheless keeps to 4/4 throughout. 
The key modulates occasionally from an E minor/major centre to a G major centre.

The bergamasca was a lusty 16th-century dance depicting the allegedly awkward manners of the inhabitants of Bergamo, in northern Italy, where the dance supposedly originated. 

 
These variations for clarinet and guitar are an arrangement of the cello and guitar version (also on YouTube), based on one of the original bergamasca tunes.

This is part of a project composed for a group based on the Old Kent Road in London.
They provided some lyrics which I set to music for them (around 1982), but the project never took off.
I never met the person to whom the letter was addressed (called Howard Nicholls apparently...)
but I got the impression that he did exist and meant a great deal to the group.
The words (now lost) certainly brought out a romantic theme within the project.
I decided recently that this particular theme would work nicely for a simple clarinet and guitar combination
