But he already had a mature mastery of orchestral writing, along with the courage to defy convention: A march takes the place of the normal triple-meter scherzo movement. It's an unconventional march that starts with an elegant melody, surveys a wide range of emotions, and dissipates into a quiet ending. It's really neither a march nor a scherzo, but something all its own.This colorful concert band arrangement was written for an adult community band. It's appropriate for a college or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. It features two solo flutes, two solo clarinets, soprano saxophone, vibraphone, and marimba (the vibraphone part is cued to allow performance without the marimba). The 1866 extravaganza was an enormous hit, with multiple Broadway revivals and numerous productions around the United States throughout the 19th century. The only extant music from any version of The Black Crook is sheet music published in 1866: One song and four selections for piano solo by Thomas Baker, the show's musical director. Program Notes: Smells Like Teen Spirit is considered a grunge and alternative rock song that inspired hundreds of grunge bands.  Its debut was in April, 1991 in Seattle, WA. The song's title comes from Mennen Company’s deodorant  Teen Spirit.  Lead singer, Kurt Cobain, named the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” after his friend’s advice.  However, he was not aware of the deodorant reference until months after the single release.  He claimed that the song was about his generation's uncaring attitude. Regardless of the meaning, the song and music video generated quite a buzz in the music charts, radio and on MTV and the song became a calling card for Generation X.  I hope you enjoy this Grade 3 marching band arrangement!
