Three of them (2, 3, and 5) are two-part echo-canons, where the imitative voices begins very soon after the first one (two beats later in each case here). The other two canons, based on pre-existing texts, adopt the more common structure of following a chord progression that proceeds over several measures (albeit an irregular, 7-measure, elided phrase in Le Rêve).

The painting depicts the town's unusual feature of three inter-connected harbours, as well as a cross on a tower, which likely refers to the church. The work is formed in three sections, as a relation to the three harbours. It explores the notion of bell-tones, and even of change-ringing, in reference to the aforementioned church bell tower. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for more advanced pianists, including students and professionals. This Latin version was dedicated to the Cathedral Music Master Siegfried Koesler in Berold Hummel also co-founded the Bruckner Festival in Würzburg together with Koesler and Erwin Horn, a specialist in the opening section of their sorks and Bertold Humme quotes Bruckner's final cadence on the name of Jesus prios to the Amen. The text of the so-called Angelic Salutaion is based on the Bible passages from the Gospel of St Luke (luke 1, 28b, 42) which was extended over the centuries with additions such as Jesus (14th century) and the Invocation to Mary. This text was included in the Breviary of Pope Pius V in 1568 which officially confirmed its status as a prayer.

A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

The term itself is of Germanic origin, form the verb 'sagen' which means to say, to recount. The title also has to do with what is said, what is recounted, in a musical epic of today. Three of these pieces, Sagas 2, 4 and 6, have the particularity of being improvisations. In Saga 1, the instrument seems to awaken out of a dream of which the two opposing elements gradually become ordered. Pedal staccati soon take control and come to predominate as they build up while, in a spirit of contradiction, various solo steps, Cornet, Cromore, unfold their melismas. The dream then reestablishes itself, this time for good. The second Saga is a sombre, frenetic dance based on groups of five semiquaves. It dies away, then, after a long silence, a note emerges, and this lone note, on three different solo stops, beaten, hunted by its two neighbouring notes in increasingly animated accents, anacruses and appoggiaturas, disappears, giving way to the sombre dance which then broadens out. It is interrupted all of a sudden by the irritated, exasperated, fuming tone of that harshness that overdoes itself and vanishes. The sombre dance appears one last time, letting itself go into paroxym. The third Saga unfolds as a very ancient chant, the memory of an Ossianic chant of the earliest times. The fourth Saga develops the lyricism of a tale to be told. But in midway comes a sort of destructive outburst of which the ever tighter links give way for a moment to pure narrativity, which, after a few upsets, ends the piece with the memory of great danger overcome by candour. The fifth Saga is a kind of quiet walk, interspersed with a few controversies, interceptions and demonstrations that are rather more lively. The sixth Saga develops a kind of theme in runs, whose constantly rhythmic rebounding might bring out the idea of apologetic or exalted acclamation.Jean Guillou (*1930) gilt als einer der bedeutenden Organisten und Orgelkomponisten der Gegenwart. Here, the orchestra builds to a climax with a full-textured rendition, after which a new version of the jig is heard, but now transformed into a reel.
