Famous for his orchestral work The Planets, he wrote Christmas Day for his students at an English school to be performed by voices and orchestra during the holiday season. Several familiar Christmas carols are arranged so that two or three may be heard at the same time. The effect of Holst’s polyphonic treatment becomes even more transparent in the instrumentation provided here. The arrangement by Clyde Grabski is for the standard woodwind quintet, but also includes substitute parts for the Oboe (Clarinet) and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet). Scores for both ensembles are included.

The Prelude has an irrevocable sense of momentum, only sated with a short cadenza like flourish and a final bout of arpeggios. The Fugue allows all four voices to develop and flourish after the forced regimentation of the Prelude. The difficulty level for the Prelude is about ABRSM grade 5-6, with the Fugue possibly slightly higher. The PDF is 21 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts. This arrangement for Clarinet Quintet (4 clarinets in Bb and bass clarinet) keeps mostly to the original voicing and style, with the melodic elements flowing between different players.   A convincing performance should be well within the grasp of players of advanced intermediate standard and above (about grade 6/7 ABRSM).

It is fresh because the arranger has chosen not to use the 19th century harmonisation that we are all so familiar with (by Robert Lucas de Pearsall). Instead they have based this new arrangement on the harmonies of the great Renaissance composer, Michael Praetorius, from the first decade of the 17th century. An optional fanfare and postlude, based on other works of Praetorius, are included to set the context of the Renaissance period. The first verse is pure Praetorius, but then the arranger takes us in different and interesting directions while remaining completely faithful to the beautiful melody. There are three differently arranged verses. Duration: 2 minutes, 30 seconds
