Composed by Michel Blavet (1700 - 1768). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 20 pages. Piper Publications #3916821. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811695).

This sonata ‘Pour deux Flutes transversieres sans Basse’ is the third of a set of six published by Boivin in Paris in 1728 as Blavet’s ‘Premier Oeuvre’. They were dedicated ‘a Son Altesse Serenissime Monsieigneur LE PRINCE DE CARIGNAN Par Mr. Blavet ordinaire de la musique de S. A. S.’ on the suitably elaborate title page.

The sonatas were printed using the soprano G clef which places the G on the bottom line of the treble staff, a practice which was not uncommon at the time. Blavet was not only the best flautist in France but also an extremely good bassoon player so would have found this clef easier to read from as he was not a keyboard player. The bass clef has been used for this edition. The sonata is suitable for players of intermediate standard and above. There are movements Adagio, Allegro, Larghetto. Allegro & Gavotta.

Composed by Jean-Baptiste Breval. Arranged by Yuriy Leonovich, Michele Galvagno. Classical,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 106 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #6029285. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.841356).

Jean-Baptiste Sebastien Bréval (1753-1823) was a French cellist and composer, who is, perhaps, best known for his cello sonatas, namely the ones in C major (Op. 40, No. 1) and G major (Op. 12, No. 5). Bréval was one of the last students of the cellist and composer Martin Berteau (1691-1771), continuing his teacher’s tradition of composing sonatas for cello with bass accompaniment. With both composers, the bass part was to be played by a second cello, very likely by the cello teacher. Many cellists opt in to have Berteau’s unfigured bass part realised by a harpsichord. However, the two-cello layout was common in the late Classical Era, especially in method books, such as Bréval’s own Traité du violoncelle (where Bréval states that the bass and the cello are one and the same), as well as Romberg’s, Dotzauer’s, et al. Romberg and Dotzauer even composed sonatas for cello and basso (second cello) accompaniment as well, Op. 43 and Op. 103, respectively.

Our current publication presents student cellists with a beautifully engraved edition of Bréval’s 6 Cello Sonatas, Op. 28 and Air de Malborough, Op. 13. Bréval composed the Sonatas in c1795, most likely in conjunction with Op. 40, since Op. 28, No. 1 picks up right where Op. 40, No. 6 leaves off. Whereas Op. 40 and Op. 28, Nos. 1-4 are in two fast movements, Op. 28, Nos. 5 and 6 include a slow middle movement, No. 6 even using the thumb. The autograph, which the editor used as the primary source, and the first edition both present each sonata on four pages in score form. Our volume includes a score and parts for each player. The cello part includes fingering and bowing suggestions by Yuriy Leonovich.

Each sonata begins with an Allegro movement in sonata form. The finales vary from five-part rondos (Nos. 1, 3, 5), to sonata form (Nos. 2, 6), to theme and variations (No. 4). The slow movement of No. 5 is in simple binary form, and No. 6 is in simple ternary. The six keys Bréval used for Op. 28 are the same as the ones he used for Op. 40, only in a different order. Op. 40 uses the following order: C, F, G, B-flat, A, D. Op. 28 uses the following order: D, C, A, G, B-flat, F. The Op. 28 sonatas are primarily written in tenor clef, whereas Op. 40 is primarily written in bass clef. The playing range is identical for both sets, with the exception of the high B-flat in m. 46 in the slow movement of No. 6, and high B and C in m. 37 of the finale of No. 6. Bréval explores more advanced bow techniques as well.

Composed by Paul Burnell. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary. 18 pages. Paul Burnell #1076184. Published by Paul Burnell (A0.1500108).

Speak Your Mind, Compromise - Barter, Trust, by Paul Burnell, composed 2000 for wind quintet and other instruments as required.

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, Horn in F

Individual parts can be used for rehearsal. In performance the combined score/part can be used - each wind quintet instrument plays as written, with the bassoon playing as if with a bass clef, the others as if with a treble clef.

Eb and alto clef parts (based on the horn in F) are also available to enable inclusion, in a larger ensemble, of alto saxophone, tenor horn, viola.

Programme Note

I wanted to write a piece that took inspiration from one aspect of the political process. The starting point was a quote from William Burke (1729-97): All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter.  [Speech on Conciliation with America, 1775]

This quote did not in itself suggest to me all that was required, and so I tried to suggest the ideas of 'SpeakYour Mind' and 'Trust' in the other two sections.

The music is presented as a combined score/part and I felt that in this context the idea of musicians playing within a single 'forum' would have an extra resonance. The music is presented on two sides of a single page, and I deliberately preceded the third section 'Trust' with the instruction 'turn over...'. In this way I hope to evoke the idea of 'turning over a new leaf'.

Composed by Monika Durbin. 20th Century,Classical. Score and parts. 6 pages. Monika Durbin #198519. Published by Monika Durbin (A0.589230).

This original composition for bassoon and harp by Monika Durbin is a fantasy-like piece in G minor. Advanced level, 3 minutes. Bassoon part makes use of both bass and tenor clefs. Harp part was written for a full-sized lever harp tuned to Eb major, but would also work nicely performed on a pedal harp. There are a number of clearly-marked lever changes, as well as the use of harmonics and fingernail glisses. Includes a score for the harpist and a separate bassoon part.

Composed by Phil Beaman. Advent,Christmas,Early Music,Jazz,Renaissance. 4 pages. Phil Beaman #935298. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1350489).

This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.  I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody.  The accompaniment, part 2, has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line.  I have altered the melody, part 1, and moved much of it to the off beats.  As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato.  This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire.  (I have also published a version on this site with text so it can be sung by a soloist or unison choir with piano accompaniment.)  (Also as a piano solo.)
range - part 1 melody - 10th, 3rd space C to high E; part 2 walking bass line, octave and a half, bass clef low A to D above middle C

Composed by Various. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and part. 17 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #1064685. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1487747).

These are eleven of the most well-known dances of the Renaissance set in five movements and selected from the famous collection entitled Terpsichore, published in 1612 by Michael Praetorius. They are sure to be a welcome addition to the elementary bassoon repertoire and make a pleasing performance item at a recital. The bassoon part is in the bass clef throughout and the highest note is usually the D above the bass staff. In a couple of pieces, the next note E is used.

By the time Michael Praetorius published his dance collection, he was one of the most famous musicians in Germany. The name is pronounced “terp-SI-cory” and rhymes with the word “hickory”. The original publication consisted of 312 dances in four, five and six parts. Although the dances were probably conceived for string ensemble, Praetorius was well aware that in practice they would be played by any instruments that happened to be available.

These arrangements for bassoon and keyboard are based on the original 1612 publication. The music sounds more authentic using a harpsichord rather than a piano, or the harpsichord sound of a digital keyboard. The keyboard part may be interpreted quite freely with ornamentation added as appropriate. During the Renaissance, it was common practice to combine separate dances to create something of more substantial duration. A similar practice is used in these arrangements which are as follows: 1. Three Gavottes; 2. Two Ballets; 3. Two Bourées; 4. Two Courantes and 5. Two Voltas.
