The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon, a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric found at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass. Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons: It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time. The texts of both Gloria and Credo are quite lengthy, and therefore Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, both ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen. Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a landmark in musical history, but it is far from being avant-garde merely for the sake of uniqueness. It is considered to be a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period, which was characterized by complex polyphonic textures and rhythmic innovations. The mass is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period. This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.  I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody.  The accompaniment, part 2, has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line.  I have altered the melody, part 1, and moved much of it to the off beats.  As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato.  This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire.  (I have also published a version on this site with text so it can be sung by a soloist or unison choir with piano accompaniment.)  (Also as a piano solo.)range - part 1 melody - 10th, 3rd space C to high E; part 2 walking bass line, octave and a half, bass clef low A to D above middle C2 pages score, 1 page @ part,  2:05 minutes.
