A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D was originally scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo playing an ostinato pattern, repeating the same harmonic progression throughout the entire composition.Regis Bookshar has now arranged this composition for a Trombone Trio which play the melody in canon and a Keyboard instrument, either a Piano or Organ, which plays the ostinato pattern. Marcello's life was a strange mixture of the political and the artistic. His brother, Alessandro Marcello (24 August 1669 – 19 June 1747) was an Italian nobleman, poet, philosopher, mathematician and musician. He wrote a concerto in D minor for oboe, strings and basso continuo, perhaps his best-known work. The work is in three movements and was first published in 1716 in Amsterdam. Its worth was affirmed by Johann Sebastian Bach who transcribed it for harpsichord (BWV 974). Several editions have been published of the famous Oboe Concerto in D minor.
