Francesco Saverio Geminiani (geb. ca. 1680 in Lucca, gest. 1762 in Dublin), einer der größten Geiger seiner Zeit, war in Rom noch Schüler von Corelli und übersiedelte 1714 nac England, wo er als Solist, Konzertmeister, Pädagoge, Konzertunternehmer und - Gemäldehändler tätig war. Sein reiches Schaffen begann mit den Violinsonaten op. 1, die er 1705 in Bologna veröffentlichte. Geminani, dessen impulsive und insbesondere in dynamisch-agogischer Hinsicht fortschrittliche Spielart den Interpretationsstil seiner Zeitgenossen nachhaltig beeinflusst hat, war ständig bestrebt, seine älteren Werke dem sich rasch wandelnden Geschmack anzupassen. Sein op. 1(a) gab er 1739 in London in teilweiser Umarbeitung neu heraus (Nachdruck Paris ca. 1740) und kündigte auf dem Titel an Le Prime Sonate a Violino, e Basso di F. The popularity of the waltz in Vienna began during the 1820s when it was still  developing from a lively peasant dance popular amongst all classes into its later, more elegant phase. These dances were written after 1824 - probably for Schubert's own gatherings and published by Schubert for use in the large dance halls which were all the rage at the time.  The three dances would have been played as one continuous piece for dancing and the tempo would not alter.

The Wind Quartet is a fitting vehicle for these two pieces from The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2, namely the Prelude No.1 and the Fugue No.22. The Prelude Completely different from the Prelude that opens Book 1, which is mainly broken chords, this opening Prelude to Book 2 features a continuously flowing sequence of melodic ideas. According to Levinson, few pieces of traditional music are more purely processive as this. It develops without a break or pause, without arrivals of significance, from beginning to end Good to play as well!! The Fugue Of course this Fugue should be in the key of Bb Minor, but to avoid all those nasty Fb's and E#'s etc the key has been altered just to make the music flow a little better in this instrumental combination (imho!), coupled with the time signature of 3/2, this Fugue should prove interesting in rehearsal! The four voices are distributed throughout the parts, and at 101 bars, it is certainly one of Bach's longest, and definitely one of the most enjoyable to play, especially in a generous acoustic.Also available here in Clarinet Quartet and Saxophone Quartet flavours!!
