I also quoted the Gregorian chant Dies Irae and varied it in the middle section of this piece. ** There is an error in the metronome marking in the second section. A work for Symphony Orchestra which consists of three movements: Armonía Bilingüe, Marcha and Beat Box. This is a work were rhythm takes over to articulate a contemporary and empirical sound world. It is born of my admiration of popular culture and presents no pretensions. The title signifies a suspension, an absence or a liberation from the prejudice of dogmatic elitist musical thinking and styles that have stigmatized symphonic music. The first movement generates the source material of which the whole work is based. Rhythm , the principal element of the piece, is used as a continuo, serving to connect all three movements. It is especially highlighted in the second movement which is a kind of instrumental rap. The final movement Beat Box alludes to the large portable radios, aka ghetto blasters, popular at one time in urban neighborhoods. Thus I conceive the orchestra here as a large radio were music changes from one station to another transmitting and transforming wireless sound vibrations into different moods and grooves.

This intermediate level piece for piano (2 min, 45 sec) is the third meditation in a volume of twelve. Its recurring melodic and rhythmic motif unifies the composition through contrasting moments of light and darkness. Throughout the harmonic progression, there is an emphasis on the subdominant--always a relaxation of tonality. And it is this plagal sound that is heard last, suggesting a resting place, a moment's peace on an unfinished journey.The performer should be aware of the left-hand's missing eighth-note rest on the down-beat of nearly every measure. It was omitted to avoid a graphic collision. Therefore, the higher octaves are all played on the ands of each beat. Also, notice that in measures 13-14 and other similar places the right-hand plays higher voiced notes in the bass clef. Be careful not to over-emphasize the left-hand ostinato figure, especially the notes played with the thumb. Lyman, B.Mus. is designed to be performed in 3 voices, or (if the chords are also used), then 4 voices on the ukulele.  The tuning is in C, or (GCEA), plus Baritone Ukulele. The arrangement works equally well for high or low G strings.  Good for recitals!  This arrangement is especially playable, but listeners will still be impressed.   I have included both a Tab/Notation version of the conductor’s score, (5 pages), with parts for melody, harmony and baritone ukulele.  A melody, notation only version is also included for your convenience. The outer sections have strong melodic lines underpinned crisp staccato support providing a solid striding beat. The middle section (which should be played in exactly the same pulse) is more lyrical and legato featuring triplets, but still retains the underpinning crotchet beat, but with a more delicate approach for variation. After a short link passage which features a couple of time signature changes, the main theme returns with a short coda- like few bars to take the piece to a conclusion. The full score is 15 pages and the parts are 3 each. It is 4 mins 15 in length.
