This 3-movement brass quintet is inspired by Latin-American music, especially salsa music.  The bass lines of the outer movements are very typical of salsa (in 4/4, 2 dotted quarters followed by a quarter that is tied into the next, similar measure), which creates a floating, sensuous music, with a very subtle downbeat.  The piece is thus best suited to professionals or serious amateurs ready to face the challenges of Latin rhythms.  The third movement is especially challenging, as it plays with the impression that the salsa bass can give, when heard at a distance, that the music is in triple meter.  The second movement is a straightforward slow dance in 3/2.  Duration: 10 minutes, 39 seconds.

It was inspired by a trip to the Lake District in the North West of England in 2000. The landscape is beautiful and we were blessed with wonderful weather and good friends. Although the piece is continuous, there are distinct sections that cover my impressions of the countryside at different points. These are labelled in the score and parts: The Mountains, Airforce Fly Past, The Ramblers, A Brief Downpour, Windermere, Scafell Pike, Haverthwaite Railway, An Abandoned Farm, The Celtic Influence, Helvellyn and Mr Jeremy Fisher. The piece concludes with a final, brief glimpse of the mountains.Mr Jeremy Fisher refers, of course, to the Beatrix Potter character who was nearly eaten by a fish.This would make an excellent own-choice test piece and, at just over 10 minutes, would make a good piece in an entertainment contest programme. The First Movement, Atmospheres, is a beautiful tranquil setting in the key of C major while the beauty portrays the humidity. The Second Movement, is a dance like movement of the scene while people are strolling in Paradise. The Key signature contrast is from D minor to D major and then to D minor once again. The last two movements are in the Key of F major. The third movement displays of what it is like to chill out in the sunlight. This deeply moving ballad is so beautiful and will portray the longest movement of the piece. The last and fourth movement is a 6/8 Dance of getting yourself exposed to the sunlight.This is a separate part scored for 2nd Horn in F with no offbeats throughout.(Score Sold Separately). 5 pages long and is Scored in 4 movements, 1 - Atmospheres , 2 - Strolling in Paradise, 3 - Chillin Ballad, 4 - Exposed to the sunlight.
