Over 200 years ago, Scottish musician Joshua Campbell wrote a fiddle tune called The Beautifull Town of Glasgow (yes, he meant beautiful, but that's how he spelled it!) in the Georgian era.  I have arranged it here for two flutes, violin, viola and cello.  It goes at quite a lick - after all, it's a dance - and the strings can go wild with their pizzicato!  A few zany trills for the flutes, which they share with the violin at one point, and some off-beat work for everyone. It is the subject of stories from the Chumash, a Native American people who have lived along California’s central coast for thousands of years. When the area experiences extreme drought, sometimes the waterfall reduces to a trickle. But it is a beautiful, shady place with a magical quality, and the water always returns.For interested students or teachers, here are a few pedagogical notes:Pedal ad lib is appropriate for this piece. Unless a player has very large hands, the right hand will need to cover most of the top notes in the bass clef (the C ostinato). This can be a welcome challenge for students, as they will need to balance this with sustaining and shaping the top melody notes. Some of the middle C ostinato notes are indicated as optional, since they are already struck as melody notes during the same beat. (But they are still notated in case another instrument plays the melody.) It might feel awkward to strike some of the other C ostinato notes that are rhythmically nearby, but it can also be a good way to practice leaving that sustained melodic note ringing while striking the same note soon after with a much quieter dynamic, which requires both control and skilled use of the pedal.About the Composer:Emily Nafius is a pianist in Southern California with her musical roots in jazz. For composition assignments, I excelled at writing pieces with an interesting melody and harmonic progression. Writing a small ensemble piece for a woodwind quintet was a struggle for me. It took me twice as long to finish this piece as any other piece before it, and I really beat myself up about it. However, this piece taught me that music takes time and that is okay. I have a bittersweet relationship with this piece, as I hated figuring out how to write it, but completely love what the finished product has become. I greatly appreciate the work of Amanda Welch, Madison Church, Kendra Sachs, Trenton Carr, Aaron Lukenbill, and Cheyenne Cruz, as the performers and director for this piece.

It has been covered in recordings something like 160 times, by Stan Kenton, Django Reinhart, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and many others.This fairly simple arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. I recorded it on harpsichord, but it also works great on a piano.The theme is stated plainly.The first variation adds running eighth notes in the right hand.The second variations switches the eighth notes to the left hand, and changes the harmony a bit.The third variation adds triplets in the right hand, while the left hand plays the same pattern over and over, a technique known as a ground bass. In the recording, I play it using the lute stop.The fourth variation is a sarabande, a slow dance in triple meter with frequent emphasis on the second beat of the measure.The fifth and final variation states the melody in octaves in the left hand, while the right hand goes crazy with sixteenth notes. The first eight measures of the right hand are inverted and modified to form the second eight measures.I had a lot of fun writing this. I hope you have as much fun playing it.
