Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The Oregon Symphony occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music. German.Im Frühling 1957 schrieb ich Nachtstücke und Arien, mit Ingeborgs Gedichten Freies Geleit und Im Gewitter der Rosen. Das letztere bestand anfangs nur aus einem Vierzeiler bis sie mir für die Komposition, aus Gründen der Symmetrie noch einen zweiten Vierzeiler hinzuschrieb, der das Gedicht noch viel schöner macht. In diesen Zeilen ist ungefähr die vorherrschende Stimmung von Nachtstücke und Arien wiedergegeben, auch wenn in der anderen Arie ein chorischer Hymnus aus eine schöne, atombombenfreie Zukunft gesungen und gespielt wird, was sich im instrumentalen Finale fortsetzt, in dessen Zentrum übrigens ein paar Noten aus dem Epilog von Ondine auftauchen. Mit dieser Musik hatte ich wohl die extremste Gegenposition zur sogenannten Darmstädter Schule erreicht, und so nimmt es denn auch nicht weiter wunder, dass bei der von Gloria Davy gesungenen und von Hans Rosbaud glänzend dirigierten Uraufführung am 20. Oktober 1957 in Donaueschingen drei Vertreter des anderen Extrems, Boulez, Nono (mein Freund der Gigi!) und Stockhausen, demonstrativ schon nach den ersten Takten von ihren Plätzen aufsprangen und den Saal verließen. Pēteris Vasks composed his Oboe Concerto in commemoration of the centenary of Latvian independence, and so the work became a hymn to his native country, its nature and its people, while simultaneously fulfilling Albrecht Mayer’s long-standing wish for an oboe concerto. The concerto is bookended by two pastoral movements: in the first – a morning nature scene – the oboe unfolds in extended cantilena passages above string tremolos and birdsong motifs in the woodwind. The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mind�, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durham�, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending.
