The name Nocturne (meaning of the night) was originally an ensemble piece in the 18th century in several movements used for for evening parties. Later In the 19thc it's one movement form, it was adopted by John Field and later popularised by Chopin. It generally has a tranquil lyrical melody and is very romantic and expressive. I have tried to keep these elements in this Nocturne. Written here for Clarinet in B flat, Viola and Piano, the parts are equally divided. Highest note top D flat ( clarinet once). Bowing for the viola has been left to the performer. It is written in the key of concert B flat minor it has a very gentle opening with harmonies evolving around a cycle of 5th's in places. The piece has three definite sections- the lyrical melody to begin with, a middle section building to a climax before a return to the 1st section. This is followed by a transitional contrasting section (poco piu mosso) wandering through a few keys to settle on an inner pedal tonic note chime. Gentle chords restore the opening once more- this opening theme climaxes towards the end and a gentle reflection of the opening bars concludes the piece. It is 4 mins 20 in length. This charming little prelude was not actually the first one I wrote for this collection, but rather a replacement for the original which felt out of place with the rest of the pieces. At first glance, it appears to be a study in thirds for the right hand while the left left hand keeps a steady underlying motion, but it is much more than that. There is a feeling of a journey, as though a leaf is floating down a stream. It starts out simple enough, with an air of peace and the image of sunlight on the water. There are moments when the trees block out the sun and the leaf goes in and out of the shimmering reflections, caught in the pull of the current, but nevertheless carried along without any concern as to where it is heading.The music takes on a minor feel as the leaf enters the rapids and is tossed about from whirlpool to whirlpool, nearly being submerged but always finding its way to the surface before finally breaking free and continuing it’s journey with the same sense of tranquility with which it began.

It is synonymous with a gift that is given at Christmas, but also refers to a very popular musical genre in our own country of the Christmas season. This genre represents the quintessential musical expression of Venezuelan Christmas. Modesta Bor, our composition teacher, always instilled in us the cultivation of this genre in the repertoire of our choirs and as creative work, in order to preserve it from its disappearance before the overwhelming invasion of other musical genres strange to our traditional Christmas holidays. The best title I found for this work was that, Aguinaldo, since it is a Christmas musical gift. It can be sung a cappella, although can also be accompanied by our traditional cuatro. It was premiered under my direction in December 1992 by the Orfeón Universitario of the Central University of Venezuela, to whom it is dedicated.

This is a three movement pantonal work for unaccompanied solo violin.  Each movement has it's own personality and character.  The first begins freely and expressively in the beginning and builds momentum to a somewhat sporadic series of various motivic manipulations, ending in an aggressive, accelerating repetition of the motif, which can be heard in various places of the following two movements.  The second movement, somewhat more quirky, is meant to provoke a sense of temporary confusion and disorientation.  The pizzicato open G in the first few measures is the disorienting element, interrupting the melody every few beats.  The rest of the piece gradually becomes more and more playful before slowing down as if unsure what lies ahead.The third movement is the shortest of the three.  It begins very eerily and slightly chilling with a downward glissando on artificial and natural harmonics.  It almost seems as if a character in a story is lost in an unfamiliar place, trying to find the way home.  As the movement progresses, it builds in expression and intensity the way a light in the distance becomes closer as one walks closer to it.  From this climax, to the end, it becomes gradually softer and slower, mimicking the burning embers of a dying fire, reminiscing of warmth and comfort.

I also chose to keep the register fairly low. The feeling I'm trying to capture: despair; knowing that everyone's fate is to fade into the wind and there's nothing anyone can do about it. There's nothing wrong with that; I've come to a place where I no longer fear death, but it's a reality of life that, at times, is impossible to ignore. There is a positive side, though. For one, the contrasting section is in A flat major and picks up tempo briefly! Before inevitably falling back into F minor... Also, on a funny note, the entire main theme is based off of an old song I wrote for my high school rock band (in like, 2004-ish?), using a commonly used chord progression: I, VI, iv, V7. This was when I was first learning to write music but I remember always thinking it would sound good as a funeral march. The song was called One More Life and the lyrics were about shedding the old, beginning anew, asking the universe for one more life. It feels good to finally have written this movement, though. I first wrote a five-part vocal to be sung by the group Five By Design (of which I was a member) back in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Unfortunately, it never found its way in to our repertoire. It sat on my computer for quite a few years before I revised it to be sung as a trio with my brother, Kurt, and his wife, Lorie. I had written a vocal arrangement of the carol for us to sing at some Christmas concerts and a few years later, when putting this album together, I returned to the first chart and adapted it for piano solo. The meter of the song moves back and forth between 3/4 and 2/4 and conveys the joy and hopefulness of the opening lyrics: “He is born, the Divine Child, Play the oboe, resound the bagpipes. He is born, the Divine Child, Let us all sing of his arrival.� It is this combination of instruments that I tried to emulate in the introduction, with the bagpipes in the left hand and the oboes in the right. When the tune proper begins, there is a definite rhythmic vitality that is maintained throughout the prelude as it celebrates the long-awaited birth of Jesus as foretold by the prophets over 4,000 years ago. From start to finish, the influence of both George Winston and Mannheim Steamroller can be heard in the music.

ЗдеÑ�ÑŒ хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.In 1963, the Russian composer Vladimir Michailovich Jurowski (father and grandfather of conductors) orchestrated ten songs by Rachmaninov, including Zdes' khorosho, and there is a later orchestration of this song by Michael Rot. You know that I usually find it difficult to renounce the original piano versions, especially when the composer didn't orchestrated them, but I recommend you to listen to Anna Netrebko singing this song with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.You might wonder why I don't share this version here, there are two reasons: first, I can’t do without that beautiful piano; two, I chose my version months ago (something that lately happens quite often). I said before that Zdes' khorosho is between contemplation and passion; Most of singers enhance the most contemplative perspective, that's the case of the lovely performance by Anna Netrebko. Others sing the most passionate version, like the one we’re listening today. Its tempo is faster than usual, it lasts about a minute and a half; maybe it would surprise you if you're used to slower versions. It is an odd form in that it does not contain any departure from the central idea; therefore there is no return. The story has a beginning and ending but uses subtle variation to push the idea along its way. .. much the way loving relationships evolve. The equivalent of the story song in classical music is a Poem, and this is what I have called this piece. An inspiration I used for my musical poem was the ocean and it’s repetition of waves as they fall in to the shoreline. I grew up near the ocean and remember how the sounds of the relentless waves used to calm me. While it was the repetitive sound of the sea that moved me as a child, today, I observed that each wave was not the same but in fact slightly different. I was amazed that it seemed that no two waves looked or sounded the same to me. This natural occurrence seemed to mirror my love for wife Carla. Each day was just something a tiny bit different. It was very natural to make these kinds of life experience connections. Bridges that joined nature, love and art.
