He chose the theme of the “four horsemen of the apocalypse� because, as he puts it, “the saxophone was long considered ‘the devil’s instrument’due to the seedy and sultry qualities associated with it.�ProgramThe story of the Four Horsemen comes from the biblical Book of Revelation. Each of the Horsemen is said to represent events that are supposed to usher in the Apocalypse, the final battle between good and evil. As with many biblical passages, there are numerous interpretations of this account debated among theologians. Those that I’ve taken in thispiece are strictly based on my own aesthetic requirements and should not be construed as taking any particular sides in these spiritual debates.The Four Horsemen symbolize the evils to come before the end of the world. It is said that a quarter of the world’s population is to be wiped out by a combination of these ills. The Horsemen pave the way for the finalbattle, the final judgement, and the Second Coming.The account begins with the White Horsemen, symbolizing pestilence. Next comes the Red Horse, representing war. Then the Black Horse, bringing widespread famine, especially against the poor of the world.Finally, the Pallid Horse, the personification of Death, reaping his reward in the victims of the tribulations.Performance NoteEach movement is assigned a different member of the saxophone family. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. I wanted this piece to convey the feeling of the shared warmth of having family and friends meeting over the festive season when everything is done, and now it’s time to enjoy! Written in Concert B flat major the introduction begins with a bell- like Christmas chime settling into the main theme which is almost like a verse and chorus. The piece has two of these sections with a link between the two. The second section is a different treatment to the first as some of the bell like figurations of the opening are incorporated. There is also a mix of staccato and legato phrasing to give contrast. The Chorus part is repeated before a short quiet reflective ending. The range is two octaves at most and there is nothing more complicated than an eighth note although it is moderately high- hence it has been set at intermediate level. I wanted 2 equal instrumental parts so there is no number 1 and 2! The whole piece is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.Ideal to be added to a Christmas concert list! Here is a 'must-have' standard for your Christmas season, The Little Drummer Boy; presented here in a simple arrangement in C for piano and solo drum.  It begins with the drum only, slowly adds LH piano then both hands for Verse 1; then both piano and drum adds some more texture for Verse 2, then it slowly unwinds and ends with only the drum.  This arrangement was written for a specific duo; a beginning first year middle school drummer and a slightly arthritis pianist.  Thus the drumming is very basic and steady patterns with long stretches before a slight pattern change (there are 5 different patterns).  And thus the piano part has a LH of mostly broken arpeggios so it can be played by rolling the wrist instead of using finger strength, and the RH is all simple detached chords so the arm can go up and down, and it rarely expands beyond a 6th, again, taking the pressure and movement off of the fingers.  Nevertheless, this is still a piece full of character and great for a featured solo this season!

Titled “My Bougainville�, the melody is that of the Australian patriotic song “The Song of Australia� (one of four songs considered on a national plebiscite for that country’s anthem, but was rejected), the lyricist is unknown. It is not uncommon for anthems in the Pacific region to use the tune of a patriotic song or hymn of a current or former colonizer (as evidenced by the “Pacific hymn� genre of anthems); Australia governed Bougainville as a part of Papua New Guinea from after World War I to Papua New Guinea’s independence in 1975. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy.The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Every attempt was taken to make this a REAL piano solo complete with the drive and magnetism that Elvis brought to it. I decided to have one of my students perform this tune on an electronic rock piano, something that I've never allowed them to do before. I wrote it for an acoustic piano in mind and I think it sounds fine on both instruments.

Then, and don't ask me where this sudden magnanimous streak came from, I decided to spin up the same chart with lyrics and chord diagrams just in case I ever needed to play it with a vocalist.Out of the goodness of my heart, ALL of the above is available to you for the low low price of (insert current minimum price for SMP chart). While I was tabbing this out from the perspective of a violinist, the range is pretty universal and should be playable on just about any treble clef instrument. Including the viola... although if you got hired to play solo viola at a wedding or a church service I have questions.It's nothing spectacular, but here's what I can promise you if you buy this chart:- THE CHORDS ARE RIGHT. I honestly can't believe there are people that get the chords to worship songs wrong on their arrangements, but here we are. Rest assured I am not one of them.- YOU CAN ACTUALLY READ IT. Finale collisions and terrible interpretations of vocal rhythms need not apply here.- THE MELODY WILL WORK ON YOUR INSTRUMENT. Again, this is not one of those hyper-transcriptions of every little vocal ornament that was sang on the studio version. It was written during March of 1883 and was performed for the first time on June 4, 1883 in Sokolniky Park in Moscow, conducted by Sergei Taneyev. The music then included excerpts of the anthem, God Save the Tsar. The American premiere was on May 5, 1891, for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City, conducted by Tchaikovsky himself. During the Soviet Era, Russian performances and recordings of the music were revised to omit the excerpts from the Czarist national anthem, replacing it with thematic material used earlier in the march, due to an official Soviet ban on the anthem. Starting with Dmitri Medvedev's inauguration in 2008, an abbreviated version of this piece is played during the Russian presidential inauguration accompanying the entrance of the incoming president, and ends well before the playing in this piece of the Tsarist anthem God Save the Tsar. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, the Coronation March does not have an opus number. It has been given alternative catalogue designations TH 50 and CW 47. Tchaikovsky's Coronation March was originally scored for a full orchestra and written in the key of D Major. Regis Bookshar has now created an abbreviated version, written in Db Major, and has arranged it for a Tenor Saxophone Quintet.
