It was written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, who was inspired by a Native American poem containing the line “For all we are is dust in the wind”.The music came from a picking exercise he was doing that his wife suggested he make a song out of. It was the last addition to the album. “Dust In The Wind” was a top 10 hit in the US and Canada in the spring of 1977 and remains the biggest hit of their career. Donuts, if you make a mistake!  The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!  I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.  â€ƒAs with those exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like. • Choose a tempo • Choose a dynamic. • Choose an articulation/style.  One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.  Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping 5 lines to play the same set in a new key.  If you want an additional challenge in terms of range, play them in different octaves to expand the set.  Additionally, you can change the Key. Play them in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.  The variations are endless!  All Donut Etudes with the same version number are compatible so you can play them in mixed duets with one person on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2.  Enjoy!

Recordare (from Requiem (K. 626) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Franz Xaver Sussmayr - Trumpet Quintet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Trumpet Quintet and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long, sustained phrases, and also to give them the chance to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (25 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed this Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a Trumpet Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. There are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may fine something else which may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. We present a work composed as a tongue-in-cheek expression of a popular street tune heard today, put through a series of 5 variations that explore different styles. It works in both a satirical as well as sophisticated manner vertically and horizontally, and uses multiple cliches that will get the audience perking up in recognition. The theme, 贺新年, is a common tune sung in Chinese New Year celebrations. In the heart of celebrating the New Year, this piece is written playable by musicians of all ages, whether in schools or as community orchestras and bands, to come together by the common celebratory notion in a work for an extended orchestra, including the saxophone and euphonium. Written by Daniel Cheng and Jeremy Goh, we hope that this season this piece can bring both laughter and reverence to the street tune, blown out of proportion in style and size. Starting the work is an atonal entry, built on tone rows and planing, legacies of Shoenberg and his contemporaries, before decomposing into an exceedingly lively statement of the theme. This is then juxtaposed beside a trip to tribal communities with interlocking rhythms and a modal distortion of the melody. From the modal mess and deviation from diatonicism, we then return to the prim and proper style of Mozart and Haydn in a short Classical variation. As if to mock its neat stature, this then is shattered with a juxtaposition beside a variation in the style of Shostakovich, modelled after the controversial Leningrad symphony, which draws on a different dimension of the theme, its banality, and propagating and emulsifying it to terrifying levels as it is distorted. Finally, a schreckenfanfare is directed marking an entry into a tribute to one of the greatest legends in music composition, with Beethoven along with its transcendental qualities of cyclism, and use of learned styles, methods of maintaining tension etc., bringing a grand ending to the 10 minute long work.

A piano solo version of this was performed Oct. 27, 2019, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, by the music collective Sacred & Secular before the start of the service. One congregation member, who also is a member of Sacred & Secular, was moved to tears. In terms of technical proficiency, For a Synagogue In Pittsburgh is an excellent fit for intermediate students/players and would fit best in recitals and/or concerts that include two or three other introspective-sounding pieces. Jörg Widmann, an internationally sought-after soloist and professor of clarinet at the Freiburg Musikhochschule, displays the exquisite refinement of contemporary clarinet sound in 'Fünf Bruchstücke' (already published) for clarinet and piano (KLB 54) and in the present 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet. While noise, as a means of expression, is given much attention in 'Fünf Bruchstücke', 'Fantasie' is largely based on the usual Romantic melodious sound, though this time with ironic side trips into dance, klezmer and jazz music, the clarinet's equivalent of light music. 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet is my first real piece for my own instrument, the clarinet. With its eccentric virtuosity and its cheerful, ironic fundamental character, it reflects the experience with Stravinsky's 3 Pieces for solo clarinet of 1919 and the tonal innovations which did not appear in music before Carl Maria von Weber's notation for the clarinet, and takes them further in a new way. It is a little imaginary scene uniting the dialogues of different people in close proximity in the spirit of the commedia dell'arte. - Jörg Widmann ...on the interpretation: It would be important to take the title completely literally – which is why the performer should of course play the piece with imagination. The most important information on the structure: the complete absence of bar lines – whenever the piece is played to me by students or other persons, I am always pleased about the player's own ideas and about the fact that the musical text is taken literally and seriously, with all its dynamic and articulation marks, and yet filled with life and imagination. What I always notice, however, is that the rhythmic fast pulse part is often played like an étude, rather than with imagination. What is most important to me, personally, is to take pleasure in making tonal distinctions, even despite the strict timing. Also known as Poor Wayfaring Stranger and I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger, this song probably originated in the early 19th century.  It has been recorded numerous times, but most significantly appears in the 2019 film 1917 where a soldier sings this plaintive melody to his fellow comrades just before going into battle. This arrangement is divided into two sections.  Section one is a very haunting scenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is a more elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions to create more drama.  It ends as plaintively as it begins.
