As a trumpet teacher with over forty years of experience teaching beginners, I believe that solid range should be developed over a long period of time. But this doesn’t mean that the beginner students need to wait for their range to improve before they dive deeper into the musical side of the instrument. At Last, Victorious! easy trumpet quartet includes the most difficult combination of skills without moving into our first intermediate level. We will talk more about skill levels below, but let me say that many people would label At Last, Victorious as an intermediate piece. In our skill level system, three sharps and six-eight time signature are both in our second beginner skill level. And yet, the highest note in the first part is fourth space E. At Last, Victorious! easy trumpet quartet is the kind of piece I would assign to my students right before they “graduate� from the second beginner skill level into the first intermediate skill level. At Last, Victorious! is a march in six-eight time signature in three sharps. It is not as long as a traditional march and the “trio� is not technically a real trio (and therefore not marked as such). But I do believe that the piece serves as a nice introduction to marches for beginner trumpet students.

Gretchen am Spinnrade (D. 118, Op. 2) is one of Schubert’s first, most successful, and most widely recognized accomplishments in the genre of the Lied, a 19th-century German art song for solo voice and piano. Schubert composed over 600 Lieder, but the breadth and compositional maturity of this 1814 example are an early indication of his gift for the form. The text is a strophic poem taken from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s play Faust, depicting a scene in which Gretchen, sitting at the spinning wheel (spinnrade), daydreams about Faust, a man with whom she is infatuated though she has only just met him and barely knows him. Schubert employs the first stanza as a refrain, repeating the text (“My peace is gone/My heart is heavy/I will never again find them�) to heighten the dramatic intensity as Gretchen becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her feelings. The piano accompaniment, with its relentless sixteenth notes in the right hand, depicts both Gretchen’s accumulating madness and the perpetual motion of the spinning wheel. Sixty-five measures pass before the pattern breaks, when Gretchen is so overcome by her emotions that she stops spinning while imagining Faust’s kiss. It then takes three tries to get the spinnrade turning again, which we hear in measures 69-71 before the spinning figure resumes in measure 72 to accompany Gretchen’s doleful refrain. This arrangement is also available for 3-part treble (SSA) voices published by Hal Leonard Corporation, 00140699.

It survives thanks to his students who transcribed many of his works during the years before 1723. The original work is in three movements, however in this setting Mr. Sauer has used the Grave central movement which is slow, dense and serious. In this work Bach departs from his previous style of writing music that is interchangeable between the Organ and Harpsichord. Mr. Sauer has done a masterful job of scoring this 5 voice work for an eight-part Trombone Ensemble of moderately advanced performers.

The bridge is led by the horn and punctuated by the upper voices of the woodwinds before passing off to a brief solo flute passage setting up the final chorus. Helping Hands is a march written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). It is dedicated to all the volunteers that make the Whit Friday March Contests possible, which is said to be the greatest free show on Earth. The piece is loosely programmatic in nature.The introduction is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands’ anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. There is the usual hustle and bustle before the second section sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day.The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. There is a small bridge that is reminiscent of previously used motifs and melodies before the hymn returns.
