An outstanding option for any wind quintet's popular music collection this arrangement of When The Party's Over features densely packed harmonies, abd subtle nuances of dynamics and texture. Scored for wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon) the arrangmenet opens with a chorale like introduction of the songs main chord progression. The melody is introduced one voice at a time over long sustained notes only joining together in a tutti at the first chorus. The texture and intensity expands in the second verse before revisitng the gently stated tutti of the chorus once again. The bridge is led by the horn and punctuated by the upper voices of the woodwinds before passing off to a brief solo flute passage setting up the final chorus. The song closes just as it begun with a soft chorale of the songs opening chord progression. Score and parts included (17 pages).

I again returned to Chopín for inspiration in this piece as the left hand opening is quite reminiscent of his Prelude Op. 28, No. 3 (though not nearly as fast). In fact, the first measure is identical to Chopín’s and they’re both in the same key. However, it immediately becomes apparent that this prelude is more inspired by George Winston than Chopín. My goal was to capture the sheer joy of the melody and the lyrics. In dulci jubilo translates as in sweet rejoicing and that’s what I wanted to bring to my arrangement. There is a somewhat extended opening section before getting to the actual melody found within a constant stream of sixteenth notes in the right hand: A challenge for the pianist to bring out the line amongst all those notes. There is also a secondary melody to be found in the left hand hidden among its own torrent of notes. There is an almost chorale-like closing for several bars before a final flourish brings the prelude to a joyous close.

The piece takes you through the various aspects of L-moments and their associated concepts. The piece begins with a Sloping melody distributed through each part. It then moves into a chaotic progression which devolves into a volatile state between the flugel and euphonium. The solo flugel is joined by two other flugels to reinforce a sense of order before crashing into discordant uncertainty. This uncertainty is heightened by the entrance of the euphonium for a hectic tonal melody descending into the latter half of the piece. A flugel and trumpet canon emerges to drives the piece into its final quantile region , before progressing into a non-dimensional cadence, leaving the audience with a sense of certainty and order.
