So, I decided to go ahead, and instead of London as a travelogue symphony, something I did for Paris and Rome, I came up with an alternative idea. This composition shares similarities with music one might hear performed by a cappella groups on college campuses, such as humming and singing on neutral vowels like “Oh� and “Ah.� Elements of this piece also resemble 20th Century English choral music by William Walton and Ralph Vaughan Williams, in addition to Britten himself. Examples include abruptly distant harmonic changes, shocking cross-relations, and slow triplets that match the rhythm of the English language. The Water Is Wide (also known as O Waly, Waly) is an old folk song of Scottish origin and like so many other folk songs exists in many variants. The lyrics partly date back to the 1600s but the song remains ever-popular today. This attractive arrangement is for flute, B flat clarinet and piano and is intended for intermediate players and for clarinet players who can work easily around the break. The arrangement would be useful for student or professional recitals, end-of-semester concerts or would make a popular encore number for a concert. It would make a popular addition to any events with a Scottish flavor or romantic themes. The imagery of the lyrics describes the challenges of love and has been reflected in the lyrical clarinet part of this arrangement which also makes considerable use of the chalumeau register. The folk song is the same one that the British composer Benjamin Britten arranged for voice and piano. This new arrangement is sure to go down well with audiences.
