When I told Gil Rose that I had written symphonies for the cities of Paris and Rome, he said Why don’t you do London as your next symphony? I told him, But I’ve never been to London. He said, Well, now you have an excuse to go there. That never happened; going to London, that is. But I was very intrigued about writing a London symphony. So, I decided to go ahead, and instead of London as a travelogue symphony, something I did for Paris and Rome, I came up with an alternative idea. Why not compose a London Symphony in homage to three of my favorite English composers: Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar? This composition shares similarities with music one might hear performed by a cappella groups on college campuses, such as humming and singing on neutral vowels like “Oh� and “Ah.� Elements of this piece also resemble 20th Century English choral music by William Walton and Ralph Vaughan Williams, in addition to Britten himself. Examples include abruptly distant harmonic changes, shocking cross-relations, and slow triplets that match the rhythm of the English language. Interest is provided by a contrasting duple feel on the last line, and a harmonic twist (picardy third) at the end of the verse (appropriately on the word 'surprise'). The piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice.
