The first half of Benjamin Kornelis's tune is sturdy and pentatonicâ€”lending an early American feel, and the second half softens, introducing the 7th of the scale. Forsaking the chorale-like melody to which this text is often sung, Kornelis provides his own new tune, sturdy and almost Sacred Harp-ish. The result is rustic and vigorous and is sure to be appreciated by your singers and listeners. A brief part of the final verse has things in legato augmentation, but then the jaunty rhythms return for the ending.
