Eine kleine Reverenz Anlässlich des 70. Geburtstags hielt der Würzburger Bischof Paul-Werner Scheele im Münchner Gasteig eine Laudatio auf den befreundeten Komponisten. In diseer Rede nahm Scheele mehrmals Bezug auf Hummels 2. Sinfonie Reverenza. Zum darauf folgenden 73. Geburtstag des Bischofs revanchierte sich der Komponist mit dieser kleinen Reverenz im Dreivierteltakt, die mit vertinbaren Buchstaben der beiden Namen jongliert. Hochzeitswalzer Der Hochzeitswalzer erklang zum ersten Mal am Hochzeitsabend von Hummels Sohn Stefan David und dessen Frau Gabriele am Österreichischen Wolfgangsee. Die beiden Klavierparts wandern gleichnishaft gemeinsam oder alleine durch Höhen und Tiefen, durch Dur und Moll, um sich am Ende im strahlenden C-Dur zu vereinen.

German.Die Motette Gegrüßet seist du, Maria komponierte Bertold Hummel am 20. Mai 1993 und widmete sie dem Gedenken seiner tief gläubigen Schwester Erika. Mein Vater, der im selben Jahr auch das Würzburger Brucknerfest mitbegründete, verstand diese Motette bewusst auch als Gruß an Anton Bruckner, dessen berühmtes 7-stimmiges Ave Maria er anklingen lässt: Im ersten Abschnitt wählten beide Komponisten die Gegenüberstellung von Ober- und Unterstimmen, und auf den Namen Jesus zitiert Bertold Hummel die brucknersche Schlusskadenz vor dem Amen. Im Jahr 1997 erstellte er nach dieser Vorlage eine lateinische Version. (C 53543)Der Text dieses sogenannten Englischen Grußes basiert auf den Bibelstellen des Lukas-Evangeliums (Lk 1, 28b, 42) die sich im Laufe der Zeit um Zusätze wie Jesus (14. Jh.) und die Anrufung Mariens (16. Jh.) erweiterten. Im Jahr 1568 erhielt er durch die Aufnahme in das Brevier Pius' V. offiziellen Gebetscharakter. Latin.This Ave Maria is an arrangement made by Bertold Hummel in December 1997 of his motet Gegrüßet seist du, Maria [Hail Maria] (C 53714) which he had composed on 20 May 1993 with a dedication in memory of his deeply religioues sister Erika. This Latin version was dedicated to the Cathedral Music Master Siegfried Koesler in Berold Hummel also co-founded the Bruckner Festival in Würzburg together with Koesler and Erwin Horn, a specialist in the opening section of their sorks and Bertold Humme quotes Bruckner's final cadence on the name of Jesus prios to the Amen. The text of the so-called Angelic Salutaion is based on the Bible passages from the Gospel of St Luke (luke 1, 28b, 42) which was extended over the centuries with additions such as Jesus (14th century) and the Invocation to Mary. This text was included in the Breviary of Pope Pius V in 1568 which officially confirmed its status as a prayer.

Uncommonly concentrated in the evoking of atmosphere and reflecting the texts strongly, these dark grey songs - to quote Ludwig Hirsch - develop a sadly expressive, almost somnambulant charm. These songs seem to have become Bertold Hummel's completely inwardly turned Winterreise, the epigram of a psychosis, full of concealed suggestion and dark references, but always more full of hope. The sun becomes the constantly invoked bearer of hope. The music is highly expressive, exploiting the various performing and bowing possibilities of the stringed instruments and their capacity for nuances to the limits; occasionally oppressive visions in sound appear. It is music in danger, of a most fragile balance. Nor are subtle musical references missing. With only one note, following the word music, harmony and tonality are conjured up.

In summer 2001, Bertold Hummel composed the present work as a commission for the Asiago Festival and brought together in the grand dimensions of his 'Fantasy in one movement' - as he himself termed it - for the first time the instruments he had always loved much during his life. Asiago - the letters a-s-a-g, corresponding to the notes a, e-flat, a, g in the German musical scale, open and close the work - is a successful excursion into the complex sound combinations of percussion instruments and the mystical, sensuous tone of the violoncello, whereby the stringed instrument occasionally takes on a percussive role and the percussion is sometimes treated like a bowed. Driving rhythms pursue each other, alternating with meditative moments. Chorale fragments lead to a grand cadenza, in which the instrumentalists have the opportunity, following patterns provided, for free improvisation. The première of this work took place on 5th August, 2001 in the Duomo di S. Matteo in Asiago in northern Italy and was in the hands of Peter Sadlo and Julius Berger, who are amongst the most committed exponents of Bertold Hummel's works.Asiago is an effective examination of the wide range of possible tonal combinations between percussion instruments and the mystic and sensuous colouring of the violoncello, in which the string instrument is at times treated percussively and the percussion instruments in the manner of a string instrument. Furious rhythms alternate with meditative passages and choral fragments culminate in a large-scale cadenza in which the instrumentalists have the opportunity of free improvisation on the basis of specified models.

Key: D major.Das Concertino classico für Violine und Klavier oder Streicher von Bertold Hummel entstand im Sommer 1999 als sein Enkelkind Fabian auf der Geige gerade die erste Lage beherrschte. Die Idee war, beginnenden GeigerInnen ein kleines Violinkonzert zur Verfügung zu stellen, um die wenigen technischen Fertigkeiten musizierender Weise zu erproben. Je nach Gelegenheit kann es mit einem begleitenden Klavier, einem Streichquartett oder zusammen mit dem Schulorchester aufgeführt werden. Der Titel verrät schon, dass sich Hummel an Form und Tonsprache des klassischen Solokonzertes orientiert. In drei Sätzen werden einfache, volkstümlich anmutende Themen vorgestellt und variiert. Eine größere Kadenz im Allegro wird von Hummel - je nach Charakter des geigenden Kindes - nur ad libitum angeboten. Die kurze überleitende Kadenz im Presto muss dagegen gespielt werden. Mit dem wehmütigen Finnischen Volkslied, das in der Elegie variiert wird, überbrückte das Ehepaar Hummel gerne räumliche Entfernungen.

Originally conceived as an Elegy for Strings in 1965, it was transformed into an Adagietto for String Sextet in 1978 and published for the first time in 1993. Hummel undertook a further arrangement of the composition in 1999 and participated with musical friends in its first performance. In one of the scores, the title is supplemented by the term “sacrale”, an indication of the religious background of this composition. In a time of increasing secularisation, the creative and no doubt also the reproducing artist have the task of pointing out to their contemporaries the transcendental, the inexplicable and the unprovable. The language of music - most effective perhaps in reaching across world frontiers - has an especially important role in this. Representations of suffering and horror alone cannot be the inherent constituent of a work of art. A reference to comfort and hope is indispensable. Furthermore, life, nature, and, for the believer, knowledge of God give cause enough for praise and thanks.” This is how my father once formulated his artistic conception. A favourite adopted term of his, “musikalische Klangrede” [musical speech), appears to me to be particularly well implemented in the Adagietto.

The Oregon Symphony occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music.
