ROSEBUD for Flugelhorn solo with big band-  The name ROSEBUD, of course, is the name of Charles Foster Kane’s beloved sled in the film CITIZEN KANE.  There is a sense of nostalgia offered in the piece which is a solo for Flugelhorn with big band.  The Flugelhorn soloist should be at the front of the band on microphone for the performance.  The work is not overly difficult and could be performed by a high school ensemble without difficulty.  It features a long flowing melodic line which is treated to both small ensemble and full tutti during the piece.  Also, there is a section featuring an echo (doppelganger) effect for Alto Sax and Trumpet.  There are no doubles except for the 2nd Trumpet which plays the Flugelhorn part.  An optional Tuba and Vibraphone part can be used.  Lead Tpt Bb5.

It does not sound much like the baroque original, however, and has been given a modern, big band facelift. This arrangement features catchy melodies, juicy harmonies and has a section near the end which can open out for improvised solos on any instrument. There are also some optional screamy high trumpet notes in the final section for those players who can reach them! Saxes, trumpets and trombones all have soli sections in the piece and it is exciting to play for all musicians in the band.
