The song was written by Per Gessle and produced by Clarence Öfwerman. It was released as the second single from the album on April 29, 1991. The song became one of Roxette's biggest hits, reaching the top 10 in multiple countries and peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was their fifth consecutive top-10 hit single in the US. The song also reached number two in the States that year. Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave) has a catchy pop rock sound and features Marie Fredriksson's impressive vocal range, spanning over three octaves. The song has a nostalgic and emotional feel, with lyrics about the pain of a fading love. In 2005, the song was remixed by British dance act Dancing DJs and released as a remix with dance act Dancing DJ. The remix version of the song was a top 20 hit in the UK. Here is a new setting of the 15th century text by John Audelay known alternatively as There Is a Flower or The Flower of Jesse. The text has been adapted into contemporary English. The multiple verses of the poem are set with slight modifications to the melody, and the harmony and choral texture are also changed with each verse. The listener and performer will immediately notice the juxtaposition of D major and D minor tonality which is the biggest challenge for the singers. The organ accompaniment provides full support for much of the work making it accessible for most four-part choirs and a nice addition into the Advent and Christmas repertoire.

My dad gave me a huge inspiration for this piece. He said, Imagine a big room with a big screen. Imagine a lone flower on the screen, slumped over from the night. It rises with the sun, growing big and tall. Imagine a storm rushing in, trying to destroy the flower. Imagine the struggle and hardship the flower endures during the storm. The storm goes away. The sun comes out. The flower wakes back up. It starts getting dark. The flower slumps back over. The flower falls asleep. I used his imagery and the music that was already in me to make this piece.
