Barnacle Bill by H Ashworth-Hope is an instantly recognised melody for generations of people in the UK. It has been used as the signature tune to Blue Peter, the longest-running children's TV show in the world. The programme, first broadcast in 1958 follows a magazine/entertainment format, features viewer and presenter challenges, competitions, celebrity interviews, popular culture, and sections on making arts and crafts items from household items. The original recording of the theme by Sidney Torch and the New Century Orchestra was used until 1979 when it was replaced by an arrangement by Mike Oldfield of 'Tubular Bells' fame. Since then there have been several versions. This arrangement for Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Euphonium and Keyboard (Strings) sees the main theme passed around the instruments and the contrasting middle section given to the Baritone Sax and Euphonium before the recapitulation of the main theme.
