Curtis Mayfield’s gospel-influenced R&B hit, People Get Ready was named by Rolling Stone as the 24th greatest song of all time, and it was dubbed by Martin Luther King, Jr, the unofficial anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. The song has been covered by top-tier singers from Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, and the Staple Singers, to Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart. I decided to use it in a church context during the season of Advent, a season of expectation and getting ready. Here is the low voice-and-piano arrangement as I performed it in December 2022. People Get Ready was written by Curtis Mayfield, and was first a hit for the Impressions, with noteworthy covers by Bob Marley and the Wailers, Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck, and Human Nature. Rolling Stone magazine named it the 24th greatest song of all time, 20th in their list of the 100 greatest guitar tracks, and has been included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

The lyrics draw on the religious messages Mayfield was hearing from his church, but also draws on the tradition of African American freedom songs. As such, this song is useful in a wide variety of situations.

This song first appeared on the 1977 album Exodus and was released in 1980 as a single which peaked at 17 in the UK charts. This easy arrangement would suit choirs that are starting to learn to sing in parts, with only some occasional singing in thirds and a repetative counter melody. The delivery needs to be relaxed and largely staccato, with emphasis on the first beat. The melody in the verse bars 24-26 needs to be sung with conviction otherwise it can sound slightly wrong and dissonant. The arrangement includes a simple piano accompaniment which can be developed further, and there is also a vocal-only score included.
