At a young age, he showed musical talent and became a pupil of Lowell Mason, an influential educator and composer who was instrumental in developing music education in the United States. Smith was also a prolific composer and wrote over 500 works, including hymns, songs, anthems, and instrumental music. Many of his hymns are still sung today in churches across the country, including Rejoice in the Lord Always, and Sabbath Bells are Ringing. In addition to his work as a composer, Smith was also an accomplished organist and held positions at several churches throughout his career, including in Boston and New York City.Smith was a supporter of music education and was influential in developing the music program at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he taught for several years. He was also a member of the Boston Academy of Music and served as its president from 1852 to 1856.Henry Smith died on October 2, 1879, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 66. His contributions to American music, particularly within the realm of religious music, were significant and helped shape the development of American classical music.

The full version was published by Shawnee Press and performed throughout the US but is now...out of print. My quintet version makes the original available for performers to play this exciting brass work. Movement two is the centerpiece of the three movements ending with a fade away solo for tuba. The first performance of the quintet took place at Eastfield College with Dr. Oscar Passley performing and conducting. All three pieces in Celebration are playable by topflight high school players and above.

During my undergraduate career at The University of Akron, like many college students, I went through a year of trying to discover what I really wanted to do. In my sophomore year, I dropped from Music Education, and picked up a double major in Trumpet Performance and Composition with a minor in Jazz Studies.  After 2 semesters of taking nearly 30 credit hours and a need to change my embouchure, I decided to focus on trumpet and come back to composition later. After finishing my BM in Trumpet Performance, I decided to go for a MM in Composition.  This piece was one that I wrote for entry into the graduate program.  To this day, it is still one of my favorite compositions!  It's a lot of fun, very difficult and taxing, but also very musically interesting.  It melds together several interesting melodic lines and motifs, and each player gets a chance to shine.  There are also a lot of great ensemble moments where lines get passed through the entire quintet and turn it into one instrument.  It's a piece for advanced players for sure, but a great feature for any group willing to give it a go!Brass QuintetAdvancedApprox. 6:30Visit zackrichards.com for more from this composer!

This energetic, musically satisfying, one-minute fanfare was composed in 2004 during Daniel Thrower’s time serving as professor of trumpet at Brigham Young University-Idaho. It was appropriately premiered by the BYU-I Faculty Brass Quintet. “Academic Fanfare� became the theme tune for the Phoenix Chamber Brass, and was used to open every PCB performance for a number of years. Dr. Thrower was a founding member of PCB, and performed with them for the 2006 – 07 season. Aside from its use with BYU-I and PCB as a concert opener, the audience-grabbing nature of “Academic Fanfare� is extremely effective for announcing anything of importance, such as ceremonial openers, graduations, inaugurations, award ceremonies, etc. It is important to keep in mind, however, that in such circumstances, shorter fanfares may be more fitting. Translated from Italian, the title of this work (“Scherzo Serio�) means “a serious joke.� The jocular nature resulting from the multi-meter and irregular meter, punctuated by strong jabs of sound, makes it impossible to tap one’s foot to the beat upon first hearing. The various sections of the work alternate between atonality and tertian harmony. As a whole it presents a clear three-part organization. This particularly fun and challenging two-minute brass quintet was completed in 2009 and premiered by the Faculty Brass Quintet from the University of Texas at San Antonio. MSgt Jim Bartelt (USAF, Retired) composed the majority of the percussion part when Gateway Brass from the USAF Band of the West toured with this piece in 2012.

Morning Has Broken is a popular and well-known Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune known as Bunessan [1] (it shares this tune with the 19th century Christmas Carol Child in the Manger[2]). It is often sung in children's services and in Funeral services.[3] English pop musician and folk singer Cat Stevens included a version on his 1971 album Teaser and the Firecat. The song became identified with Stevens due to the popularity of this recording. It reached number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number one on the U.S. easy listening chartin 1972,[4] and number four on the Canadian RPM Magazine charts. The hymn originally appeared in the second edition of Songs of Praise (published in 1931), to the tune Bunessan, composed in the Scottish Islands. In Songs of Praise Discussed, the editor, Percy Dearmer, explains that as there was need for a hymn to give thanks for each day, English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon had been asked to make a poem to fit the lovely Scottish tune. A slight variation on the original hymn, also written by Eleanor Farjeon, can be found in the form of a poem contributed to the anthology Children's Bells, under Farjeon's new title, A Morning Song (For the First Day of Spring), published by Oxford University Press in 1957. The song is noted in 9/4 time but with a 3/4 feel. Bunessan had been found in L. McBean's Songs and Hymns of the Gael, published in 1900.[5] Before Farjeon's words, the tune was used as a Christmas carol, which began Child in the manger, Infant of Mary, translated from the Scottish Gaelic lyrics written by Mary MacDonald. The English-language Roman Catholic hymnal also uses the tune for the James Quinn hymns, Christ Be Beside Me and This Day God Gives Me, both of which were adapted from the traditional Irish hymn St. Patrick's Breastplate. Rounding out the “American Trails” with the fifth composition in the collection, “Trail of Tears” is in reference to the heart-wrenching dark history of over 60,000 American Indians being expelled from their lands.  During the period between 1830 and 1850, natives from five tribes were forcibly displaced from their homelands in what later became known as the American Deep South.  These “Five Civilized Tribes” included the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole nations.  Under the leadership of President Andrew Jackson, Congress passed the “Indian Removal Act” in 1830 which revoked all land ownership from all Native Americans in the Southeast.  Although Jackson was not the originator of the movement to remove the Indians, it was his top legislative priority upon taking office.  In his mind, they were a primary obstacle for the fulfillment of the Manifest Destiny and American national success.  There were many opponents to the violent legislation, such as David Crockett of Tennessee and Catherine Beecher.The most brutal year of the Trail of Tears occurred in 1838 among the Cherokee who had resisted the Treaty of New Echota of 1836 through petitions and pleas to the US government.  Despite their efforts, the expulsive treaty was ratified and the resistant Cherokee were compelled by militia to vacate all lands east of the Mississippi River.  The heaviest death tolls occurred in the summer and winter months of 1838 after the deadline to depart had passed in May.  Disease, exposure, starvation, and harassment by frontiersman compounded the physical exertion of the “death marches” that killed many.This composition extensively borrows the four-note motif from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.  That symphony was composed in the early 1800s in Europe at the same time as the growth of the anti-Indian sentiment across the American frontier.  Rather than primary thematic material, “Trail of Tears” uses the motif as a morose, plodding accompanimental pattern that adds depth of sorrow to the musical homage.
