Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 95 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #15877. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869357).

Program note:
First of all, a huge embrace for Max Hobart who has been so very supportive by promoting and premiering new works for the orchestra. Since 1991, I have written three works for Max and the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston. Symphony No. 4 ... War and Peace is my fourth contribution and this work is dedicated to Max.

A year ago, John Finney and the University Chorale of Boston College premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000. It was a millennial commission by the Jesuit Institution for the community of Boston College. For that occasion I had originally planned to write a Mass whose texts would include both the Latin from the Ordinary of the Mass - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Agnus Dei - and poems concerning the atrocities and senseless killing in warfare during the last century.

However, as it turned out, the poems I chose ended up reflecting the Latin text, which is all about faith and redemption. But I still wanted to write an anti-war symphony. When I approached Max with this idea, he was very excited. Initially he was a little concerned that I might want to use the Tolstoy novel as my inspiration. I assured him that it would not be a four-hour symphony.

In order to convey a political message through a symphonic work, texts set as songs are the most direct way.

For this symphony, I have narrowed my focus to poems written by veterans of the First World War - some euphemistically call it the Great War. The first poem by Rupert Brooke, The Soldier, has an uneasy, patriotic cheerfulness to its message. The second poem by Wilfred Owen, Dulce et decorum est, is a more realistic view of warfare. Dying for one's own country is not so cool when the dead and the dying are staring at your face!!! The third and last poem by Ivor Gurney, To his love, reflects on the aftermath of war: peace, but at what cost!!!

Rupert Brooke (1887 - 1915) died on a naval expedition near the Greek island of Gallipoli. He died of blood poisoning.
Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918) was wounded three times in France in the spring of 1917 and was sent back to England to recuperate. He returned to the Front, and was killed on November 4, 1918, just a few days before the Armistice was signed.

Ivor Gurney (1890 - 1937), a composer as well, was acutely sensitive to the horrors of the war and, after being wounded and gassed in 1917, he was sent back home to a mental hospital. He died twenty years later without ever recovering from the traumas of war.

Hope

By Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers -That perches in the soul -And sings the tune without the words -And never stops - at all -And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard And sore must be the storm -That could abash the little Bird- That kept so many warm -I’ve heard it in the chillest land -And on the strangest Sea -Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.

Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece.  He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys).

After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar).

His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music.

By Andrew Lamb. By Henry Smith (1813-1879). Arranged by Andrew Lamb. Christian,Classical,Religious. 19 pages. Andrew Lamb #807281. Published by Andrew Lamb (A0.1209169).

Title: The Vesper Bell
Composer: Henry Smith (1813-1879)
Arranger: Andrew Lamb
Description: This is my transcription of the prelude The Vesper by composer Henry Smith (1813-1879).

Henry Smith was an American composer and organist born in Salem, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1813. At a young age, he showed musical talent and became a pupil of Lowell Mason, an influential educator and composer who was instrumental in developing music education in the United States.

Smith was also a prolific composer and wrote over 500 works, including hymns, songs, anthems, and instrumental music. Many of his hymns are still sung today in churches across the country, including Rejoice in the Lord Always, and Sabbath Bells are Ringing. In addition to his work as a composer, Smith was also an accomplished organist and held positions at several churches throughout his career, including in Boston and New York City.

Smith was a supporter of music education and was influential in developing the music program at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he taught for several years. He was also a member of the Boston Academy of Music and served as its president from 1852 to 1856.

Henry Smith died on October 2, 1879, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 66. His contributions to American music, particularly within the realm of religious music, were significant and helped shape the development of American classical music.

Chamber Concerto for Strings

In this experimental work for Strings every letter of the title is been represented by a block of music. The conductor determines the entrances and fade outs of the instruments as well the repetition of blocks of music. Dynamics are provided for specific movements and different other sentences could be also created. Could I? Would I? If I Would?  Etc…

Duration: approx. 7-10 minutes

Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas. 20th Century,Jazz,Opera,World. Score. 10 pages. Silver Sickle Publications #4729017. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942058).

This witty and extremely fun work to perform by composer Apostolos Paraskevas was conceived after real events. There is a version for Soprano/tenor and Piano and one for guitar as well. Easy to perform and the text was inspired of the following narrative.

I Slaughtered an Orange over the Sink...

...and it just sat there…It didn't say a word, not a sound of anguish, not even when my teeth started to tear apart it's flesh little by little... I knew it was a special orange but I couldn't fathom the magnitude of its character…Even when gentle I took it away from its friends there at the top of the kitchen counter, it looked at me almost with a sense of gratitude. Yes, gratitude.! As if it was saying: Thank you! Thank you for helping me to fulfill the purpose of my life…Since I was a little seed I knew I would serve a higher purpose. My sacrifice will help a human to become a healthier mother, doctor, composer, a better scientist.

Yes, I think I felt it said…a better composer as well.

...and there I was, sinking my teeth deep inside its flesh and taking all of what it had to offer. It's life, it's substance, it's gratitude for serving a higher purpose.

I slaughtered it over the sink, to avoid any evidence of what had happen there. The remaining outer sell, I placed it on the stove top and lighted up with fire, as my mother use to do, to release the heavenly smell and there it was. Evaporated everywhere! I inhale it, It became totally a part of me.

Today, I slaughtered an orange over the sink and I didn’t say thank you!

'Hanjale', which means swagger in Arabic, derives its name from the colloquial saying Awal al-raqs hanjale (the dance begins with a swagger). The saying can be interpreted to mean that larger actions begin with small moves or gestures. Depending on the context, this Arabic saying can allude to both positive and negative outcomes from simple beginnings. This work uses an ornate rhythmic cycle with seventeen beats as a frame work for its rhythmic structure and a four note motif as a basis for its melodic and harmonic structure. Originally composed for solo mandolin, this arrangement takes advantage of the cello's expressive range.
Duration ca. 12.

This beautiful song for Christmas asks what would have happened if no one had noticed the Bethlehem star that night, or heard the angels sing.  Would we have known that the Christ Child was born?  But fortunately for all Christians everywhere, we know!  The vocal ranges are not difficult in this piece, but the dynamics are very important, as well as enunciation to tell the story.  It begins with a solo, which is in range for any voice (SATB).  The piano accompaniment is an important part of the story, and it adds a rhythmic beat and good movement and chording.  Performance time is @ 4 minutes.

“‘Beacon Street March’ was born from the experience of being a Boston University pedestrian: students are adept at Dodging crowds, bikes, cars, tour groups, and green line trams. The march’s ragtime-like rhythms, percussive punctuation, and bouncy tone all reflect the syncopated gaits, quick stops, and half runs that get Beacon Street pedestrians where they need to go. It all culminates in a festive final strain, mirroring the Boston Marathon which runs down Beacon Street every year.

In this beautiful a cappella arrangement of the traditional Silent Night Christmas carol, original material has been added to create the illusion of the Herald Angels singing praise and announcing Christ's birth.  For the educator and choir director, this piece creates many teachable moments.  It is very important that the melody be heard clearly throughout the piece, even though it occurs in various voice parts throughout.  The piece is notated meticulously, so that breath marks and expression marks, when followed, help create the illusion of the Heavenly Choir.  Performance time is just over 2 minutes, so would be very appropriate for a Christmas Eve Prelude or special music.

An American Hymn is an exquisite song about love of country, originally from the movie East of Eden. This arrangement is suitable for high school, college, community and church choral groups.   For educators, it is an enjoyable piece to teach choral breathing, subtle dynamic changes, and matching of vowel sounds. A good solo voice (tenor or soprano range) is required.  The supporting choral background is very subtle and interpretive and enhances the beautiful lyrics and melody. Simple rhythms, choral harmonies and moving piano accompaniment make it a pleasure to listen to and to perform. Performance time is 3:37.      .
