SKU: A0.722808

Composed by J. (John) Friedheim. Arranged by Jari A. Villanueva. Classical,Folk. Score and parts. 26 pages. JV MUSIC #6082641. Published by JV MUSIC (A0.722808).

Nine Trios for brass trio is an arrangement of the Music for 2 Bugles and Trombone written in 1836 by J. (John) Friedheim.

Scored for Cornet, Horn in F and Trombone parts with optional sub parts for Cornet (Horn) and Baritone TC (Trombone)

The original collection consists of four pages containing three walses [sic], a march, and five quicksteps. It was originally published in 1836 by Gottlieb Graupner and may be some of the first published music for an ensemble of brass instruments. Friedheim was born at Prag in the Kingdom of Bohemia on December 7, 1792 and arrived in Boston in September  1834. John Friedheim, professor of music (as he was described in Boston city directories), is identified as the conductor of the New England Band on the cover pages of two marches-Bunker Hill Quick Step and Shamrock Quick Step.

Friedheim appears to have been a competent musician (a clarinetist) who worked in the Boston area. His Series of Music for Two Bugles and Trombone enjoyed some success but its continuation was cut short by the death of the publisher, Gottlieb Graupner, in 1836.

Friedheim was employed for a period of time at the National Theater (formerly the Warren Theater) and conductor of the New England Band. It was not as popular as the Boston Brigade Band and the Boston Brass Band. Friedheim was a busy musician and composer and the many facets of his activities in Boston included being a clarinet soloist, conducting the New England Band, leading the National Theater orchestra, authoring a book on playing the double bass, and composing works of incidental music for orchestra and of waltzes and marches for brass band including the work here.

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. With Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld. (2005) This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.†I said, “Yes. I would be delighted to do so.†He. 90 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #431371. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869309).

Program note.
Maestro Charles Ansbacher has been a devoted supporter of my work for many years. In the past 6 years he has commissioned me to write two works for his ensemble, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra:

1) Mambo!!! (2003)
2) Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld (2005)

This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Boston’s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great!

The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevenson’s poetic design.

I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable.

In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores.

In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog.

In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 94 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #2016287. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869215).

During the spring of the Millennial year 2000, music director John Finney and the Boston College University Chorale premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000 for chorus and orchestra in Trinity Chapel at Boston College. It was a large work, close to an hour long in duration. It was a momentous occasion and I was extremely pleased with the performance by John and the BC University Chorale. Ten years later in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Boston College, I decided that I wanted to write another choral work for the BC Chorale. This time the subject would be something directly connected to the Jesuit identity of Boston College. I chose for text the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889). This Manley Hopkins project would come in two parts. Part One would be a private uttering of faith in God, and Part Two would be a public declamation of the same topic. The private utterance would be in a chamber setting. I decided on a song cycle setting for soprano and piano. The public declamation would be the choral work with orchestra for the Boston College University Chorale. 1. Part The First … THOU mastering me God! (2010) for soprano and piano The ten poems for this song cycle came from GMH's The Wreck of the Deutschland, Part the First. This 30-minute song cycle was premiered in Bapst Library on March 31, 2011. The performers were Megan Stapleton, soprano, and Diane Braun, piano. 2. God's Grandeur (2012) for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. For this work I chose five poems by GMH. Pied Beauty God's Grandeur The Habit of Perfection Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord. Inversnaid Why did I choose GMH's work besides the fact that he was a Jesuit? I was very surprised and thrilled that his poems are so fanciful, imaginative and abstract in form and content for someone who lived in the 19th century. These abstract poetic qualities are the very things that a composer in the 20th and 21st centuries would find inspiring when they are seeking texts for musical settings. I did indeed find the sound and silences of GMH's words quite inspirational. Hearing music in those words came directly and quickly as I was working on the piece. I hope the audience will enjoy the work as much as I did when I was creating it.
