It has become a perennial standard both as a song and an instrumental in traditional jazz, folk music, and bluegrass, and versions have repeatedly appeared in other genres including rock and roll. Numerous scholars and musicologists have written about the song, and it is one of the standards of the New Orleans brass band tradition. It is frequently played at Second Line Parades, wedding receptions, parties and at the end of jazz funerals. This arrangement is written for a traditional New Orleans jazz combo and includes an optional Banjo / Guitar part. The second Sarabande is dedicated to Maurice Ravel. The Sarabande is a Renaissance dance in 3/4 time.  Originally for the Piano, these three works are very slow, rich in harmony and dreamy in mood, making them excellent vehicles to show off the rich texture of the five-part Trombone ensemble. The three movements are about 12 minutes in length and can be performed by moderate to advanced performers (the 1st part is in alto clef and reaches a high E-flat, but the other parts are more moderate in difficulty.
