It features a boatswain’s whistle (or bosun’s whistle or pipe), which I’ve notated in approximate pitches in the Trumpet 1 part. A rare revisit to Sousa’s medley march days, this march features Stephen Foster’s Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Ethelbert Nevin’s Narcissus. This unpublished march could have been called “Homage to Nevin and Foster�, “Homage to Pittsburgh�, or “The Belle of Pittsburgh�.It is one of Sousa’s more unusual works, but highly inventive. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion. Secondly, to teach form of the musical composition, in this case, an early version of the fugue. Last of all, to expose students as a pertinent example of where and when the music was composed and to what order of circumstances it was created.
