It is played for wedding receptions, parties, parades and at the end of a jazz funeral. The song is based on a simple 12-bar blues form and has a very singable melody. Before the melody starts, the trumpet plays a loud, high call to which the crowd responds, Hey! The band then proceeds to play the melody while second line parade festivities ensue.This arrangement, written at the Intermediate level for a Traditional New Orleans Brass Band (Combo including an optional Banjo/Guitar part ), is a fun and easy to perform tune for students or professionals. Laid to Rest composed by Johnson Lee was played at the funeral of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, founding Prime Minister of modern Singapore. I was moved to compose this piece Laid to Rest as I saw death as a final resting place and the funeral, a celebration of that person’s life as he is sent off on a journey of peace. Hence, this piece takes on a lighter, hopeful yet reflective feel compared to other pieces of heavier, melancholic notes. I was deeply honoured when it was first played / performed at Singapore’s late founding father, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral. I had to control my tears as I was conducting the band and was so grateful for being able to honour him with my composition.

One rainy day he collects worms for fishing, and sets off across the pond on his lily-pad boat. He plans to invite his friends for dinner if he catches more than five minnows. He encounters all sorts of setbacks to his goal, and escapes a large trout who tries to swallow him. He swims for shore, decides he will not go fishing again, and hops home. The music follows his encounter with the trout. Jeremy is represented by the lugubrious fugue theme in the basses, the river by the descending scale pattern and the trout by the descending triplet figures. Every part of the band gets to play something interesting and the music needs to be lively.
