TWO FROM SEVEN for Big Band- This piece is a re-thinking of the second movement from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony Op. 92 written in 1811.  Beethoven commented that he thought it was one of his best works.  The orchestral version has been used numerous times for numerous purposes.  One of the more recent uses was in the 2011 film THE KING’S SPEECH.  It is a slow burn style piece.  It starts small with a relentless rhythmic and harmonic ostinato that builds and builds to a big band shout chorus.  There is a trumpet solo indicated, but the solo could be played by any member of the band.  There are optional parts for vibes and tuba.  The work is not overly difficult and could be mastered by a high school band with little effort.  Paramount to a good performance is articulation and dynamics.  Also, the blending of muted brass with saxophones should be considered.  There are no doublings.  Leade Tpt C6 (D6 opt.)

Scored for Six C Flutes, March of the Musketeers is a bright heroic march based upon the characters in the story of The Three Musketeers Quite a simple piece, it is in ternary form starting in the concert key of C major with the middle section in F major, before returning to C major and on to a flourishing ending. The outer sections have strong melodic lines underpinned crisp staccato support providing a solid striding beat. The middle section (which should be played in exactly the same pulse) is more lyrical and legato featuring triplets, but still retains the underpinning crotchet beat, but with a more delicate approach for variation. After a short link passage which features a couple of time signature changes, the main theme returns with a short coda- like few bars to take the piece to a conclusion.
