Brenda Dillon's arrangement of In the Bleak Midwinter for SATB choir, piano accompaniment and flute or another C instrument, is a Christmas carol based on a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti. The poem was published in Scribner's Monthly in 1872. It first appeared as a musical setting by Gustav Holst in The English Hymnal in 1906.

If There Is Love was originally written for choir and was premiered during a service at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas.  Brenda later transcribed it as a piano solo dedicated to the memory of her mother, Dorothy Duncan, who was a living embodiment of humility, grace, mercy and love.

He Is Born, the Divine Christ Child is a traditional French carol that comes from the region of Provence.  French Christmas carols tend to be lively.  The oboe and bagpipes mentioned in the lyrics reflect the joy of this carol.  It is included in Brenda Dillon's Memories of Christmas Collection - Book 2.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot refers to the Biblical story of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to Heaven by a chariot.  The lyrics also contain a veiled reference to the Underground Railroad.  Spirituals were often sung as call and response:  Swing low, sweet chariot (Coming for to carry me home), Swing low, sweet chariot (Coming for to carry me home.) There Is a Balm in Gilead is a traditional spiritual which contains a reference from the Old and New Testament.  A balm is a salve for a wound, and figuratively, it means a universal cure.  The lyrics suggest a promising healing to those who suffer:  There is a balm in Gilead, To make the wounded whole, There is a balm in Gilead, To heal the sin-sick soul. The Snow Lay on the Ground is a traditional Irish carol.  Since the actual date of Christ's birth is not known, mention of snow raises questions.  Christmas wasn't celebrated on December 25, until 336 A.D.  This arrangement is included in Brenda Dillon's Memories of Christmas Collection- Book 2.  It's written in 6/8 meter and has a lilting dance feeling.

Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child is traced back to the era of slavery.  It's an expression of pain and despair as the lyrics describe the hopelessness of a child torn from its parents.  Steal Away is a song with a coded message, not only about having faith in God, but messages about slaves running away to seek their freedom.  Sung softly in the dark of night, it was a signal that the coast was clear and now was the time to escape their bondage.  They sang hopefully:  Steal away, steal away, Steal away to Jesus! Deep River, perhaps the best known and best-loved of all spirituals, referred to the slaves' yearning for freedom and the rivers that would have to be crossed to get to the Promised Land.  They thought of these mighty waters as rivers flowing into distant horizons.  Campgrounds may refer to secret worship services.  They sang longingly:  Deep River, My home is over Jordan, Deep River, Lord, I want to cross over into campground. All My Trials is a folk song which became popular during the social protest movements of the 1950s and 1960s.  It's classified as a spiritual because of its biblical and religious imagery.  Joan Baez suggested it began as a pre-Civil War era Southern American  gospel song.  It tells the story of a mother on her death bed, comforting her children.  No matter how bleak the situation seemed, the struggle would soon end:  Hush little baby, don't you cry, You know your mama's bound to die.  Too late my brothers, too late, but never mind, All my trials Lord, soon be over.
